Kaschtanowo ( Russian Каштаново , German  Schmilgienen , 1938 to 1945 Kornfelde ( Eastern Pr.) , Lithuanian Smilgynė ) is a place in the Russian Oblast Kaliningrad . It belongs to the local government unit Stadtkreis Polessk in Polessky District . The former town of Obscherninken / Dachsfelde also belongs to Kaschtanowo.

Kaschtanowo is 34 kilometers east of the city of Polessk (Labiau) at the intersection of the regional road 27A-145 (ex A190 ) with the municipal road 27K-112 from Lipowka (Szacken / Schackenau) to Gromowo (Lauknen / Hohenbruch) . Until 1945 Uszballen / Mühlenau (Russian: Krasnaja Poljana, no longer existent) was the next stop on the Königsberg – Tilsit railway line (today Russian: Kaliningrad – Sowetsk), whose tasks are now performed by the Zalessye-Novoje station .

The village, called Schmilgienen until 1938, only consisted of a few small farms and farmsteads before 1945. Between 1874 and 1938 it was part of the Obscherninken district (renamed “Dachsfelde” from 1938 to 1946, no longer exists today), then until 1945 it was incorporated into the Korehlen district (now Russian: Sowetskoje) and belonged to the Labiau district in the Königsberg district of the Prussian East Prussia Province . In 1910 Schmilgienen had 77 inhabitants. In 1933 their number rose to 165 and in 1939 was 150. A year earlier, namely on April 1, 1938, the neighboring towns of Kermuschienen (1938 to 1945: Forstreutershof, no longer existent) and Paschwirgsten (1938 to 1945: Bünden, existed also no longer) to Schmilgienen, which was called "Kornfelde" since June 3, 1938, incorporated.

As a result of the war, the place came to the Soviet Union with northern East Prussia in 1945 . In 1947 he was given the Russian name Kaschtanowo and at the same time was assigned to the village Soviet Zalessovsky selski Sowet in Bolshakovo Rajon . Since 1965 the place belongs to the Polessk Raion . From 2008 to 2016 Kashtanovo belonged to the rural municipality Zalessovskoye selskoje posselenije and since then to the urban district of Polessk.
