Kyjov (Hungarian Kijó ) is a municipality in northeast Slovakia with 742 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Stará Ľubovňa , part of the Prešovský kraj , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .
geography
The municipality is located on the dividing line between the Leutschauer Mountains to the west and the Čergov Mountains to the east of the village, on the north side of the Pusté Pole saddle . Kyjov lies in the source area of the Hradlová brook in the Poprad catchment area . The Minčol ( 1157 m nm ) in the Čergov mountains dominates the village by almost 500 meters. The town center is located at an altitude of 673 m nm and is 21 kilometers from Sabinov and 27 kilometers from Stará Ľubovňa .
Neighboring municipalities are Šarišské Jastrabie in the north, Livovská Huta in the east, Kamenica in the south and Pusté Pole in the west.
history
Kyjov arose in the second half of the 14th century on the territory of Kamenica and was first mentioned in writing in 1390 as Kyo . At the end of the 16th century, Kyjov was a medium-sized village, almost exclusively inhabited by subjects of Russian and Slovak descent. In 1828 there were 95 houses and 696 inhabitants who were employed as foresters, grain traders and farmers. In the late 19th century, Kyjov was affected by several waves of emigration. Until the 20th century, the Bornemissza and Dessewffy families owned local estates.
The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Kyjov had 729 inhabitants, including 326 Slovaks , 210 Roma , 166 Russians and two Czechs and two Ukrainians . Two residents indicated a different ethnic group and 21 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .
667 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 26 residents the Roman Catholic Church, nine residents the Orthodox Church, two residents the Evangelical Church AB and one resident of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. Seven residents had no denomination and the denomination of 17 residents was not determined.
