Location of the municipality | |
Laax (German, Romansh Lags ) is a municipality in the Surselva in the Surselva region of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland .
The official language is Sursilvan . The place name (originally Lags ) means "lakes". The field names Lavanuz and Nagiens are considered pre-Roman.
geography
The municipality extends from the Laaxer Tobel up to the watershed of the Bündner and Glarus mountains and to the Vorab glacier . The lakes Lag digl Oberst and the Laaxersee are located in the municipality . Uaul Taviarna, known for its capercaillie population, is located above Laax . To the east of the village lies a deep ravine through which the Ual da Mulin brook dug its way through the rubble of the Flims landslide .
history
Laax is indirectly mentioned in a document in 765, when Bishop Tello von Chur bequeathed numerous areas of the lower Surselva, including his inheritance from the village of Flemme (Flims), to the Disentis monastery . Field names on Laax soil are mentioned in his will.
The village of Laax is mentioned for the first time in 1290 in a directory in Chur Cathedral . In the Habsburg land register of 1309, the market and court of the Free of Laax are mentioned. In 1428 the Free of Laax bought themselves free from the rule of Count Rudolf VII von Werdenberg-Sargans for 300 gold ducats . In 1677 Udalrich de Mont, Bishop of Chur, consecrated the new Laax church to the patron saints Gallus and Otmar .
In the Middle Ages, Laax formed a market cooperative with Sagens . It was not until the 19th century that the municipal areas were finally separated from each other. In terms of church, Laax also belonged to Sagens at first, but in 1525 it became independent with the establishment of its own parish church (St. Othmar and Gallus). After the Laax-Seewis court was dissolved in 1851, the community was assigned to the Ilanz district.
In 1880 the first hotel was built in Laax, the Seehof .
