final

August 12, 2018, 8:00 p.m. CEST

The Dutch European champion from 2014  - Sifan Hassan  -, who had also been very successful in the championships at world level in recent years, did not take part in the 1500-meter run here in Berlin , but decided on the 5000- Meter run , which she then won. The favorites were primarily the two Britons Laura Muir - fourth at the 2017 World Championships  - and Laura Weightman - sixth of 2017 World Championships - as well as the Polish European Champion of 2016 Angelika Cichocka and her compatriot Sofia Ennaoui, who won the second semi-final race made a strong impression two days before this final.

The two British co-favorites designed the race from the front from the start. Initially, Weightman led with a rather moderate lap time of 1: 09.54 minutes for the first four hundred meters. Then Muir took the initiative and accelerated the pace significantly. The second lap she ran away from the lead in 1: 02.59 min. In the further course, Muir remained brave and kept the pace high - 1: 01.89 min for the third lap. At this point the field was already stretched, some runners had to tear down. Weightman was still in second place ahead of Ennaoui and the Irish Ciara Mageean and the Spanish Marta Pérez, but Muir's opponents were already struggling not to lose contact with her. Muir worked for a small lead, which gradually grew larger.

Pérez now had to let go and lost many positions before the finish line. There was also a gap between the second-placed Weightman and her pursuers. But Ennaoui and Mageean fought their way back. At the end of the target curve Ennaoui then passed Weightman, while the leading Laura Muir had hurried and secured the European championship title by a clear margin. Laura Weightman defended her bronze place against Ciara Mageean's attack to the finish. Sofia Ennaoui won the silver medal ahead of the two. The Czech Simona Vrzalová was fifth, ahead of the Portuguese Marta Pen. The seventh and eighth place went to Hanna Hermansson from Sweden and Darja Baryssewitsch from Belarus. Marta Pérez finished ninth.
