The men's 5000 meter run at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 10, 12 and 14, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .
36 athletes from 28 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by Eamonn Coghlan after 13: 28.53 minutes, silver went to the EC runners-up in 1982 over 5000 and 10,000 meters. Werner Schildhauer with 13: 30.20 minutes, who had also won silver here five days earlier over 10,000 meters. Martti Vainio secured the bronze medal with 13: 30.34 minutes. Vainio was in the 10,000 meters in 1978 European champion and 1982 European Championship become -Dritter.
