Lewaschi ( Russian Леваши , Dargin Лаваша ) is a village (selo) in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 10,011 inhabitants (14 October 2010).
geography
The place is about 60 km as the crow flies south-southwest of the republic capital Makhachkala in the mountains of the Greater Caucasus , which rise in the area with the summit of the Kulimeer ( Кулимеэр ) to 2263 m . The village is located on a plateau above the deeply cut valley of the Chalagork, which flows over Gubdenosen and Manasosen to the Caspian Sea .
Levaschi is the administrative center of Levaschinski Rajons and the seat and only locality of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Selo Levaschi. Over 95% of the population are Dargins .
history
The village in the center of the Dargin settlement area, known since the end of the 17th century, became the administrative seat of the Dargin Okrug (Darginski okrug) after the territory was annexed to the Russian Empire in the course of the Caucasus War in 1854 , which initially became the short-lived Derbent governorate , and then from 1860 an oblast Dagestan and from 1921 belonged to the Dagestani ASSR .
On November 22, 1928, the Okrug was converted into a canton named after the village, and on June 3, 1929 into a Rajon, which still exists today.

Lewaschi lies at the intersection of several regional roads, some of which have been newly built or routed in recent years. From the north, these are 82K-005, which leads from Makhachkala via Buinaksk (where the nearest train station is) to Gunib in the south-west (from Levaschi formerly part of the R275), from the east 82K-012 from Sergokala (formerly Part of the R275) and from the southeast the 82K-013 from Mamedkala via the Rajon centers of Majalis , Urkarach and Akuscha .
