The Limbaži District ( Limbažu novads ) is an administrative district in Latvia , north of Riga in the Vidzeme region.

Location and geography

The Limbaži district borders the Gulf of Riga at Skulte for 5.8 km . The adjacent administrative districts are clockwise: Salacgrīva , Aloja , Valmiera , Pārgauja , Krimulda , Sēja and Saulkrasti .

The Limbaži district is partly located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve . The rural area is rich in lakes. A railway line from Skulte to Rūjiena was shut down.

Structure and population

As part of an administrative reform in 2009, the old Limbaži district was dissolved and a new administrative district was created. In addition to the city of Limbaži with 7983 inhabitants (as of July 1, 2014) on an area of ​​almost 9 km², it also includes the seven surrounding communities (pagasts)

  • Katvari with 1267 inhabitants on 125 km²,
  • Limbaži with 2369 inhabitants on 228 km²,
  • Pāle with 795 inhabitants on 146 km²,
  • Skulte with 2061 inhabitants on 146 km²,
  • Umurga with 1154 inhabitants on 190 km²,
  • Vidriži with 1475 inhabitants on 106 km² and
  • Viļķene with 1311 inhabitants on 225 km².

On July 1, 2010, 19,548 inhabitants were registered in the administrative district (around 90% of Latvian nationality), of which almost 8,500 people lived in the city of Limbaži alone. On July 1, 2014, there were still 18,415 residents in the Limbaži district, 7,983 of them in the city itself.
