List of rectors at Heidelberg University

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following list contains the rectors of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . It is based on the comprehensive list by Hermann Weisert, Dagmar Drüll and Eva Kritzer. The rectors up to the dissolution of the Electoral Palatinate in 1803 are listed in a selection, whereas the officials of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries are listed in full. In their case, the date of assumption of office is specified, whereas the end of the term of office can be deduced from the assumption of office of the successor.

Rectors up to 1802 (selection)

In the early years of Heidelberg University, a new rector was elected four times a year. This procedure corresponded to the usual practice at the University of Paris and was maintained in Heidelberg until 1393. Then they went over to a half-yearly cycle, which was maintained until 1522.

Vice Rectors from 1802 to 1919

With the dissolution of the Electoral Palatinate , Heidelberg and its university came to the Margraviate of Baden (from 1806 Grand Duchy of Baden ), whose rulers took over the office of rector personally from this point on (1803–1811 Karl Friedrich , 1811–1818 Karl Ludwig Friedrich , 1818–1830 Ludwig I. , 1830–1852 Leopold , 1852–1856 Ludwig II. , 1856–1907 Friedrich I , 1907–1918 Friedrich II. ). The official business in the administration of the university took over for him a professor, who took over the office of the "prorector".

Rectors since 1919

With the dissolution of the Grand Duchy of Baden, the rule that the sovereign took over the rectorate ended. Now the previous “prorector”, i.e. the professor who manages the university's official business, has been referred to as the rector again.
