lunatic festival
The lunatic festival is a non-profit music festival that takes place annually on the university campus of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg . The festival is organized by a group of volunteer students. The non-profit association lunatic e. V. forms the basis for the project. The line-up includes artists of different musical genres and styles. After the two-day open-air event, aftershow parties will take place on both days on the university grounds. There are some warm-up parties and other preliminary events in the run-up to the festival.
history
The association lunatic e. V. was founded in autumn 2003 by 25 Lüneburg students as part of the student practical seminar "Festival Organization". The aim was to organize and run a music festival on the Lüneburg university campus. The lunatic festival celebrated its premiere on June 17, 2004. Since then, the festival has had up to 2,300 visitors annually. In the course of time, the festival area was expanded to include the "playground", where a wide variety of initiatives and small, regional bands have the opportunity to present themselves. In 2014 the festival was sold out for the first time with 3000 visitors a day.

Sustainable orientation of the lunatic festival
In addition to the main objective of the lunatic e. V., to organize a successful festival, since the festival year 2007 the topic of "events and sustainability" has been the focus of work. Together with environmental scientists from Leuphana University, a guideline was designed to make it possible to make the festival socially and environmentally compatible. The first steps were the neutralization of the CO 2 emissions caused by the arrival and departure of artists and visitors by means of CO 2 environmental certificates and the production of print products from 100% recycled paper.
Since the winter semester 2007, the Leuphana University of Lüneburg has had a special partner seminar of the lunatic e. V., which tries to further deepen the previous orientation. In addition, the lunatic festival has been presenting a new “sustainability topic” every year since 2010, which focuses on a certain problem in the field of sustainability. In 2010 this topic was "Mobility" followed by "Water" in 2011 and "Energy" in 2012.
Awards
In autumn 2008 the jury of the competition “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” awarded the lunatic e. V. selected from more than 2000 applications and recognized as a showcase project. The competition is under the patronage of Federal President Horst Köhler and is part of the location initiative “ Germany - Land of Ideas ”, which was launched by the federal government. Every year 365 projects are awarded which stand for Germany's wealth of ideas and innovative strength - one every day.
According to the notification of the winners, the lunatic festival is an "excellent idea with a role model (...), it recognizes the challenges of the future and sets significant trends in its field with trend-setting ideas". The competition honors the efforts of the students in the field of sustainable development - in ecological, economic or social areas within the festival organization.
In October 2007 the lunatic e. V. awarded the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Foundation's second prize by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and 39th US President Jimmy Carter . The foundation wants to promote student volunteer work and annually awards three non-profit projects from the university environment.
The lunatic festival today
The lunatic festival continues to see itself as a learning project, the aim of which is to strengthen the cultural scene in Lüneburg and promote the social commitment of young people. Every year a new team is formed in order to give as many students as possible practical experience in the field of event organization. A small number of experienced participants in the role of festival management ensure the transfer of knowledge. The 20 or so newcomers are divided into the areas of artistic management, press and public relations, technology and infrastructure as well as finances and take on individual tasks of festival planning on their own responsibility. Since the winter semester 2009/2010, the lunatic project has been integrated into the curriculum of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg in the complementary course (in the perspective of “Practice and Projects” under the title “Project Management in Festival Organization”).
