Competition format

Regular season

The 16 teams play against each other twice in the regular season. So each team plays a total of 30 games. The best 8 teams, but at least 2 per conference, qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season wins the MLS Supporters' Shield.

MLS Cup Playoffs

The playoff pairings are determined based on the placements in the conference tables. If more than four teams in one conference qualify for the playoff, the surplus teams will switch to the vacant places in the playoff tree of the other conference. The quarter-finals (conference semifinals) will be played over two games, the semifinals (conference finals) and the final in one game. The away goals rule does not apply.

International qualifications

The best team in the regular season and the winner of the MLS Cup qualify directly for the CONCACAF Champions League . The defeated finalist and the US Open Cup winner qualify for the qualifying round for the Champions League. The four best-placed teams that do not participate in the CONCACAF Champions League qualify for the SuperLiga .

As a Canadian team, Toronto FC cannot qualify for the Champions League via MLS. This is only possible via the Canadian Championship .

US Open Cup

The best 6 US teams of the regular season qualify directly for the round of 16 of next year's US Open Cup. The remaining teams play two more places in the round of 16 in an internal MLS qualification tournament (KO system).

Toronto FC cannot qualify as a Canadian team for the US Open Cup or is not eligible to play for this tournament.

Season course
