The 1986/87 Maltese Premier League was the 72nd season in the history of the Maltese top football league . The Ħamrun Spartans became champions for the fifth time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Floriana and Tarxien Rainbows replaced the relegated FC Birkirkara and FC Mqabba . Tarxien was first class for the first time, Floriana for the first time since the 1984/85 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
