Heinz Strunk (born May 17, 1962 in Hamburg ; real name Mathias Halfpape ) is a German writer , musician , satirist and actor . Together with Jacques Palminger and Rocko Schamoni , he forms the humorous trio Studio Braun .

Life

Halfpape grew up as the illegitimate son of a music teacher in the Hamburg district of Langenbek , which belongs to the Harburg district. In his youth he suffered from severe acne conglobata and received classical music lessons ( flute , saxophone ). After graduating from high school (1983), he prepared for the entrance examination at the music college. At the age of 18, he developed psychosis due to cannabis abuse. Until the age of 24 he suffered from severe depression. In 1984 he attended the pop course in Hamburg, and in 1993 a second time. From 1984 to 1988 he attended the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . Under his real name Mathias Halfpape, he was a member of Michy Reincke's band, which celebrated success with songs like Valerie Valerie and an a cappella version of Taxi to Paris . Together with singer Anja Krenz, he produced the album Paradise is Far Away (1989) as Dis Noir . From 1985 to 1997 he was a member of the dance band Tiffany’s , with whom he toured northern Germany.

Since the production Fun with Heinz (1992) he has published under the pseudonym Heinz Strunk, which later figures as an alter ego in his novels. At the same time he develops the character Jürgen Dose, which he describes as his "life figure" and u. a. used in footfall in the crawl space (1996) and the resulting novel Jürgen (2017). In 1993, fun with Heinz happened to Bela B. , the drummer of the band Die Ärzte . Through him the album was passed on to Rocko Schamoni , who later founded the trio Studio Braun together with Jacques Palminger . On the album Die Bestie in Menschengestalt by the Doctors, which was released in the same year, the following sentence can be heard at the beginning of the song Brain Storm : “Yes, hi, this is Heinz Strunk speaking and the noises behind me are Die Ärzte. I squeeze both stinks together and say: one, two, three and the stage is clear. "

From 1998 Strunk had guest appearances in the Sat1 weekly show with the program Offener Kanal Hamburg-Harburg . From 2003 to 2004 chaired the Strunk VIVA telecast Fleischmann TV and Jürgen socket show on Radio Fritz . After a few self-distributed CDs, he released his first regularly published album in 2003 with the title Einz , which was followed in June 2005 by the second album with the title Trittschall im Kriechkeller .

His strongly autobiographical book Fleisch ist mein Gemüse was published in 2004 , in which he reflects on his experiences with Tiffany’s and describes the fate of an ambitious musician in a mediocre dance band with bizarre descriptions of the northern German province. As a first edition, 4000 copies were printed. The book had sold over 400,000 times by February 2012. Praised - for example by the FAZ  - the author's ability to observe and language skills and his sometimes thoughtful and sad nuances. However, former musical accompanists criticize, among other things, that Halfpape, with his musical ability, could have decided against the “dance music” and for “his” music instead of referring to the village audience, from whose entrance fees he ultimately lived. In 2008 the novel Die Tunge Europa was published by Rowohlt Verlag , in which the protagonist Markus Erdmann, a comedy writer, describes seven days of his bizarre and at times bleak life. In 2005 the operetta Phoenix - Who Owns the Light, was premiered at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus , based on the bestseller Meat is My Vegetables and in which the other two members of Studio Braun also participated. The book was edited as a radio play by Annette Berger in 2005 . The audio book for the novel was published in the same year. Strunk has also read in all other books as audio books on the Roof Music label . In addition to his readings from meat is my vegetables , Strunk performed with Charlotte Roche , with whom he read from a doctoral thesis from 1978 entitled Penis Injuries During Masturbation With Vacuum Cleaner .

In the 2005 Bundestag election , Strunk ran after Rocko Schamoni in second place on the Hamburg electoral list of the PARTY without joining the party. In the Hamburg state election on February 24, 2008 , he ran as the top candidate in first place on the state list. In the 2011 mayor elections , he was again the top candidate and also specifically entered the race as a candidate for the office of First Mayor . He received 0.75 percent of the vote.

In the 2007 film Immer nie am Meer by the Austrian director Antonin Svoboda , he played the character of Berni Schwanenmeister, who clearly has autobiographical traits, at the side of the satirical duo Stermann & Grissemann . In spring 2007 Meat is My Vegetables was filmed under the direction of Christian Görlitz . Strunk himself is involved in the film as a commentator. The world premiere of the theatrical version of Meat is My Vegetables - A Country Youth with Music took place on January 19, 2010 in the small theater of the Wuppertaler Bühnen under the direction of Iwona Jera.

Strunk has been publishing columns in the satirical magazine Titanic since March 2012 . These were initially called The Strunk Principle (published as a book in 2014), since 2015 they have been called Heinz Strunks Intimschatulle (published as a book in 2019). Heinz Strunk has appeared in the TV satirical magazine extra 3 since 2013 . Strunk had various guest appearances with bands, for example on the saxophone at Blumfeld or in 2011 with Scooter in the Volksparkstadion , where he played a solo on the flute to How Much Is the Fish . He can also be seen in Scooter's video Can't Stop the Hardcore .

In 2014, Strunk published a collection of stories by the writer Botho Strauss under the title The Hunter Stuffed Back in His House .

Heinz Strunk at the Leipzig Book Fair 2016

In 2016 his novel The Golden Glove was published , the protagonist of which is the Hamburg serial killer Fritz Honka . Honka and Strunk frequented the eponymous pub in Hamburg-St. Pauli . The novel was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. The work was also able to secure second place in the hr audio book best list for April 2016 and was awarded the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize 2016. The annual review of Mr. Strunk, Mr. Schulz and the year 2016 , broadcast on NDR in December 2016 , for which Strunk was in front of the camera together with Olli Schulz , was nominated for the Grimme Prize in the entertainment category. In the film adaptation of Jürgen - Today is Lived (2017), Strunk himself played the title role. Together with Charly Hübner (as Dose's friend Bernd Würmer), he received a Golden Camera for the best German TV film in 2018 .

In 2017 he opened the Latin American bar “Cantina Popular” in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel together with ex- RAF member Karl-Heinz Dellwo . It closed in 2018 until further notice. In 2018 he produced the 10-part radio play podcast “Family Constellation” for Spotify . In the same year his short story volume Das Teemännchen was published . In 2019 he published his Titanic column Heinz Strunks Intimschatulle as a book under the title Nach Notat zu Bett .

Heinz Strunk lives in Hamburg-Altona and is in a relationship with Ciara George-Lynch, who works for the Reeperbahn Festival .

Literary influences

Heinz Strunk processed numerous literary influences in his works. In the novel Fleckenteufel (2009) he addresses early reading experiences with Landser books and Charles Bukowski . In Die Tongue Europa (2008) he repeatedly quotes the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk . In the text collection The Hunter Stuffed Back in His House, published in 2014 , Strunk describes Botho Strauss as the "author of his life". In interviews, Strunk names numerous other influences such as Michel Houellebecq , JM Coetzee and Philip Roth . In his column, Heinz Strunks Intimate Box , published as a literary diary Nach Notat zu Bett (2019), he devotes himself in detail to reading diary authors of the 20th ( Franz Kafka , André Gide , Max Frisch ) and the 21st century ( Rainald Goetz , Fritz J. Raddatz ). Even Albert Speer's Spandau Diaries are cited.

Short radio plays and music

After the failure of serious attempts as a composer and producer, for example with the pop album Paradise is Far Away (1989), Strunk increasingly turned to the production of humorous short radio plays and pieces of music. Strunk produced material that he published on various sound carriers since the early 1990s. Strunk's role models in the humorous short radio play genre are Heino Jaeger and Helge Schneider . Jens Carstens , Anja Krenz and Jovanka von Wilsdorf from the band Quarks are among others on Strunk's first CD, Fun with Heinz (1992) . The voices of the band Die Ärzte can be heard on the CD Der Mettwurstpapst (1995). At first Strunk recorded with an eight-track tape machine , later with the sequencer software Logic . Strunk claims to have an extensive archive of audio files with field recordings and sound samples , including numerous variants of human body expressions such as flatulence and belching .

Numerous short radio plays consist of radio commercials for fictional products such as the "Kackstelze", a mobile device for defecation ; the parlor games “constipation” and “Lustgreis”, the “saliva sponge Gregor”, the “Popelhilfe Edgar”, the “potato nose knife”, the torture agency “Folter Lübcke”, the care product “Structural Care ”, the meat product “Eichmanns schlimme Augenwurst” and a sitcom about animals that have missed their job (a forgetful avalanche dog and an untalented carrier pigeon ). Other recurring scenarios are doctor's offices and hospitals ( Extremities, Der Wanderhode, Der Errtum, Leistungs, Der Krankenhausbesuch ), interviews ( XXL-Votze, Bad Segeberg, Malte, With bare hands, frosted glass pane, taking a shower !, pile-ups ) and school classes ( assburn , Pykniker ). Two cycles of short radio plays are grouped around Strunk's alter-ego figure Jürgen Dose : the album Juergen Dose - Trittschall im Kriechkeller , released in 1996, and the CD Heinz Strunk - Trittschall im Kriechkeller , released in 2005 . From the life of Jürgen Dose.

Characteristic of Strunk's speech technique , which is also used in his audio books, is the use of slip of the tongue , unclear pronunciation and speech errors such as lisp and stutter . For a severe speech defect, which combines nasalism with indistinct consonants, Strunk pulls the corners of his mouth apart with his thumbs while covering his nose with other fingers. The technology is used in the figure of Jürgen Dose's friend Bernd Würmer , among others . His congenital speech defect is referred to as the "tubal lip" in reference to the mouth opening of a brass player . For some characters, Strunk adjusts his voice to create an age-related dysphonia effect. In the Fest & Flauschig podcast, Olli Schulz uses a similar technique influenced by Strunk. In numerous short radio plays, Strunk alienates his voice with the help of pitch and formant effects. Guest voices can be heard on various pieces. In children's songs, one child takes over the singing voice. Some pieces use samples from previous productions with female soul singing ( young and fat ).

Strunks pieces of music use elements of electronic music ( Teilebahn , Stop den Wahnsinn !!! ), hits ( mother is a sex machine , chocolate games with Ursula, Das Strunkerlied, Alert Rahmstufe-Song, Pykniker-Song ), from children's song ( My best friend, Bazill-Song, Immer loosely-Song ), Easy Listening ( Our Mission ) and Spoken Word ( AA-Fingers, Awakening Bodies, Fantasy in Minor, Suckers, Stupor, The Song of Break-In ). Strunk's own musical influences lie in jazz . For the instrumentation, Strunk mainly uses electronic drum rhythms , synthesizers and woodwind instruments . Several pieces contain flute solos, like those used by Strunk in Fraktus. The expressive use of the altissimo register is characteristic of his saxophone style .

Strunk has set various texts to music several times, including Saugetücher , a laudatory text about the suction power of kitchen towels . Strunk first produced the text in 1992 in radio play form (here a mother reads it as a children's poem) and later as spoken chant with electronic beats (on the albums Fraktus - Welcome To The Internet from 2015 and Aufstand der thin Hipsterärmchen , 2019). The unrhymed poem suction towels like any texts ( The light is not for me, AA finger, Klein's apartment ) a language with reduced grammar and faulty syntax :

I was gone the other day, bought the towels

They soak up everything when you've been crying somewhere

My friends were thrilled, pissed on the floor straight away

To see how the towels soak everything up

Since the album They called him Dreirad (2015), Strunk has set various texts from the invective genre to music, including Scheißhausalien, Fernsehkoch, Slow Eaters and Old Father . The ten-part Spotify audio series Family Constellation (2018) uses numerous earlier short radio plays and pieces of music as samples or text templates. The title track Dackelblut was previously published in two versions on Trittschall im Kriechkeller (2005) and you called it Dreirad (2015).

Remarks

On the doctors album Planet Punk from 1995, Heinz Strunk plays the flute in the songs Rod loves You and Meine Ex (plodierte girlfriend) - in the latter song he also speaks the line of text "... spread out in the room".

Prakken describes the “Harburg scene” in a more differentiated and mischievous way, but - as far as the hardship of touring the country is concerned - comes to similar, but less public disdain, conclusions - see Roland T.
