The House of Assembly , also known as the National Assembly , is the lower house in the bicameral system of Zimbabwe .

Elections and offices

210 members (up to 2008: 150 members) are elected to the House of Assembly for five years each. In addition, 60 female MPs are appointed. The last election took place on July 31, 2013.

The chairman is the speaker , since 2013 Jacob Francis Mudenda.

The parliament is located in the capital Harare . The former hotel for white settlers was converted into a parliament in 1898 and extensions were added several times from 1937.

A new parliament complex for 100 million US dollars has been under construction since 2017 in the future capital Mount Hampden , about 20 km from the center of Harare. The new building, financed by the People's Republic of China , is scheduled to be completed in 2021. Mount Hampden is in the home province of former President Robert Mugabe .
