National Assembly (Eritrea)

The National Assembly of Eritrea ( Tigrinya : Hagerawi Baito ) is the national unicameral parliament of Eritrea .

It has a total of 104 members, of which 64 are the appointed members, 40 members represent the members of the Central Committee of the Popular Front for Democracy and Justice (the only legal political party in the country). According to the country's constitution, which has not yet come into force, it has 150 indirectly elected members. The parliament is currently controlled by the interim government of Eritrea .

The National Assembly was re-established in February 1992 after it was forcibly dissolved in 1961 by order of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie . In a lengthy process, the Eritreans elected a total of 399 representatives to the six provinces of the country, which should lead to the formation of the constituent assembly. Regional elections began on January 4, 1997 in some parts of the country and were completed in 1997, in others by March 1.
