2016 Nestroy Prize Winner

The Nestroy is an Austrian theater prize that is named after the poet Johann Nepomuk Nestroy and has been awarded in fourteen categories since 2000.

After the tradition-steeped Kainz Medal , which was donated by the City of Vienna and awarded by the Mayor of Vienna from 1958 to 1999, the City of Vienna initiated this new theater prize, the award of which is broadcast by ORF .

The price

The award will be given to theater professionals from Austrian theaters in performances of the previous year. The prize for the best performance is awarded for the whole of Germany.

A jury of Austrian theater critics nominates three candidates per category. The “Academy” then determines the final winner by postal vote, which consists of all previous winners of the Kainz Medal , the Nestroy Ring and the Nestroy Prize, as well as all those who have been nominated so far. It currently consists of 310 actors and theater people. It is sometimes criticized that the members entitled to vote only actually saw some of the nominated productions.

The main sponsor is the Austrian Lotteries . Erste Bank acted as sponsor up to and including 2004, which is why the award was also called “Nestroy - Der ERSTE Wiener Theaterpreis”; the bank withdrew its support prior to the 2005 award. The Nestroy statuette is based on a design by the metal artist Gabriele Kutschera . It resembles a fan that is fanned out seven times.

The award was initiated by Karin Kathrein , Werner Urbanek and the City of Vienna . Kathrein also chaired the jury from 2000 until the Nestroy Theater Prize was awarded in 2018 and was awarded an honorary Nestroy in 2018 as a farewell. Then Lothar Schreiner took over the interim chairmanship. From the 2019/20 season, cultural manager Ulli Stepan will chair the jury.

In 2006, a piece by the namesake Johann Nestroy (" Hell Fear ") was awarded the Nestroy Prize for the first time.
In 2008 ( Burns ) won the award for Best Actor ( Markus Hering ) and Best Actress ( Regina Fritsch ).
In 2009 Birgit Minichmayr won two Nestroys in one season (best actress and audience award) .
