The Ngawa Autonomous District of the Tibetans and Qiang is located in the north of the Chinese province of Sichuan and is partly part of the eastern Tibetan cultural region Amdo , partly part of the Gyarong region , which in turn is considered by many to be part of Kham . Its administrative seat is the large community of Barkam in the district of the same name. Ngawa has an area of 83,201 km².

Earthquake in 2008
The epicenter of the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2008 was in Wenchuan County, in the extreme southeast of Ngawa.
