Location of the Okres Vsetín

Vsetín (German district Wsetin ) is an okres in the north of the Czech region of Zlín . More than half of the total area of 1,143 km² is covered by forests, around a third can be used for agriculture. A little more than half of the 143,332 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) live in cities.

In the north-east there are small deposits of hard coal , but mining them is difficult due to the geographical conditions in the Beskydy mountain range . In the south there are small stocks of natural gas . Most of the workforce is employed in industry (39%), agriculture hardly plays a role here. The unemployment rate is around two percentage points above the Czech average.

The forests of the nature reserve in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids are home to rare plants and animals. Due to its landscape, Vsetínsko is an attractive recreational region for both winter and summer vacations. Every year around 167,000 tourists visit Vsetín, for which around two hundred accommodations are available.

The Valašské Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is one of the historical and cultural monuments . The life of the Wallachians , who originally came to Moravian Wallachia from Romania , is shown in the museum in Vsetín Castle and museums in Valašské Meziříčí and Velké Karlovice .
