With Ostheide the eastern part of the will Luneburg Heath east of the city of Lüneburg and Uelzen basin in the north and east of the Südheidemoore to middle and lower reaches of Ise referred in the south. The integrated municipality of Ostheide with the municipalities of Barendorf , Neetze , Reinstorf , Thomasburg , Vastorf and Wendisch-Evern is also located in this spatial area . In a narrower sense, Ostheide only refers to the northern part, which is characterized by terminal moraines and drains to the Elbe. It consists of the East Hanoverian gravel moraine with the forest area of the Göhrde and the up to 142  m above sea level. NHN high Drawehn and its slopes and foothills to Lüben in the south and is mainly in the Lower Saxony districts of Lüneburg and Lüchow-Dannenberg . On the western edge are smaller areas in the district of Uelzen , in the southeast in the Saxon-Anhalt Altmarkkreis Salzwedel ; in the district of Gifhorn lies mainly the southern part and only minimal peripheral parts of the eastern heath in the narrower sense.

The continuation of the core ridge to the south-east, into the historical Altmark area , is called West Altmark Forest Hill Country and is counted as part of the natural spatial neighbors of the Lüneburg Heath, Wendland and Altmark .

Natural structure

The natural spatial main unit Ostheide is structured as follows:

Goehrde

The Göhrde near the forester's house Röthen
View from the Hohe Mechtin to the Pampower Berg

The core landscape of the Ostheide is the Göhrde (642.54). This relatively homogeneous, flat, undulating forest landscape has an altitude of about 80  m above sea level. NHN and only reaches heights over 100  m in a few places . In the Göhrde there are the nature reserves Göhrde (north, 80 ha), Schweinsgrund am Tannen and Lissauer Berge (88 ha, east), forests at Jagdschloss Göhrde (170 ha, extreme east) and Breeser Grund (187 ha, extreme southeast).

The Göhrde is framed to the north, east and south by Drawehn , a mountain range that is only half wooded with significantly higher relief energy and significantly higher summit heights. It is naturally divided into the Dannenberger Geest in the north and the Hohe Geest in the south.

Elevations of the Göhrde

The following elevations of the Göhrde are worth mentioning (in brackets the height above sea level :)

  • Hill south of the village of Göhrde ( 108  m ; east of the Göhrde; fire watch tower)
  • Fechtenberg ( 104  m ; west of the Göhrde north-east of Himberg )
  • Adlershorst ( 102  m ; north of the center of the Göhrde)
  • Sandberg ( 92  m ; western foothills of the Göhrde north of Himbergens)

Dannenberger Geest

The north of the Dannenberger Geest (642.53) is known for its steep drop to the glacial valley of the Elbe . The steep slopes between the mouth of the Jeetzel near Hitzacker and, to the northwest of it, the mouth of the Kateminer Mühlenbach near Neu-Darchau are called ( Die ) Klötzie ; Occasionally the northern part of Drawehn in the triangle Neu-Darchau- Darzau- Hitzacker is understood by that name . The White Mountain reaches 109  m here , while the Elbe, just 1.2 km away, passes at a height of only 9.5  m .

Also to the northwest beyond the Kateminer Mühlenbach there is a comparable steep slope over Walmsburg , where the direction changes noticeably from west-northwest to northwest, to Alt Garge . Although the Viehler Berg only reaches 62  m here , the landscape near this falls horizontally just over 100 meters from the 50  m height line to the Elbe at m , which corresponds to a gradient of 40%. The difference to Klötzie is that here the slopes are straight and without any noteworthy ridges.
The northwest extension of the Klötzie to the Viehler Mountains as well as the Bassenberg , which is about 4 km away from the Elbe slopes and reaches up to 107  m at peaks , have already been included in the Dahlenburg Basin on Blatt Lüneburg, but in the sum of their natural properties they still correspond more to the Dannenberger Geest .

Starting from the White Mountain, the Kernberg the Klötzie, the ridgeline of the Drawehn first passes to the south reaches east of Nieperfitz 115  m , and then pivots around for short gradually east-southeast to the Wedderiener mountain at Wedderien and 10 km west Dannenberg's 126  m to to reach. Halfway between the mountain and the city is the Maujahn Kesselmoor , which is protected by a 37 hectare NSG.

From the Wedderiener Berg, the ridge line swings again to the southwest in order to reach the center of the Drawehn am Hohen Mechtin ( 142  m ) approximately south-southeast of the Göhrde .

Elevations of the Dannenberger Geest

The following elevations of the Dannenberger Geest are worth mentioning (in brackets the height above sea level ):

  • Hoher Mechtin ( 142  m )
  • Pampower Berg ( 140  m ; south of the Hohe Mechtin)
    • Sareitzer Berg ( 106  m 3.5 km east-northeast of the Pampower Berg)
    • Silberberg ( 87  m ; 1.3 km east of the Sarreizuer)
  • Stangenberg ( 134  m ; northwest of the Hohe Mechtin) - Dannenberger Geest
  • Wedderiener Berg ( 126  m ; 10 km west of Dannenberg )
  • Hill east of Nieperfitz ( 115  m ; highest mountain of the northern Drawehn, which is separated by the B 216 and the L 255 Metzingen-Hitzacker or the Harlinger Bach )
  • Weißer Berg ( 109  m ; core mountain of Klötzie southeast of New Darchaus )
  • Bassenberg massif (up to 107  m ; 6 km northeast of Dahlenburg ; Basisberg (e) of the northwestern Klötzie extension, which drops steeply to the Elbe near the Viehler Berge (see below))
    • Kirchberg ( 107  m )
    • Stadtberg ( 106  m ) - southwest summit
    • Bassenberg ( 98  m ) - western foothills
  • Seißelberg ( 93.7  m ; extreme north of Drawehn, immediately east of Nahrendorf ; AT in the north-east)
  • Madurance Berg ( 88  m ; southern edge mountain of the Hohen Geest, which, starting roughly 5 km west-north-west Pampower Berg, protrudes northeast of Waddeweitz peninsula-like to the south into the lower; separated by a depression from Sareitzer Berg and Silberberg; AT in the southeast)
  • Viehler Berg (e) ( 61.1  m ; northeast edge of the Dahlenburg basin, northwest extension of Klötzie near Alt Garge ; northernmost mountain of Drawehn)

High Geest

Immediately west of the Hoher Mechtin and its neighboring mountains Stangenberg ( 134  m , northwest) and Pampower Berg ( 140  m , south) the terrain flattens out to Göhrde altitudes below 100  m . This is where the interface to the Hohen Geest (653.50) is located, which merges into the Göhrde to the north near Hohenzethen . The ridge area of the northern Hohe Geest has the character of a plateau - the summit An der Konau ( 111  m ) near Vaddensen only barely towers over the surrounding area; What is striking, however, is the steep drop on the east side, where the altitudes gradually rise to 123  m to the south from 107  m ( Spitzberg ) over 114  m ( Güneitberg ) to the Ledigsberg southwest of Clenze . At the height of the Ledigsberg, the west-east expansion of the altitude is noticeably large; the Fuchsberge 4 km west of the Ledigsberg and about 6.5 km west of the interface with the Niederen Geest already extend right up to the Uelzen basin .

The eastern border of the ridge area, however, soon moves west when viewed in a southerly direction and consists almost exclusively of the 113  m high Juchterberg between Schnega on the east and Soltendieck on the west . The ridge only briefly widens around the 122  m high Pugelatz , where, on the state border with Saxony-Anhalt, the last strikingly steep south-east flank also occurs. The nominal Ostheide ends south of it and already outside of Lower Saxony with the mountain peaks around the 121.5  m Pistolschen Berg , which already have a significantly weaker relief.

Although the ridge continues after a slight depression between Lüben (Lower Saxony, west) and Höddelsen (Saxony-Anhalt, east) in the western Altmark forest hill country (main unit 865, part of the greater region 86 Wendland and Altmark ), the highest peaks exceed 100  m -Threshold from now on only very tight with an overall weaker relief.

Elevations of the Hohe Geest

The following elevations of the Hohe Geest are worth mentioning (the height above sea level in brackets ):

  • Ledigsberg ( 123  m ; 4 km west-southwest of Clenze ; AT on the eastern slope)
    • Spitzberg ( 85  m ; eastern foothills to the Niederen Geest)
  • Pugelatz ( 122  m ; 4 km southeast of Soltendieck , immediately southwest of Müssingen ; all southern foothills are in Saxony-Anhalt)
    • Körberge (up to 115  m ; eastern foothills of the Pugelatz southeast of Müssingen)
    • Kronenberg ( 112  m ; south summit)
    • Großer Aprenberg ( 108  m ; southwest foothills of the Kronenberg)
    • Falschheitberg ( 106  m ; independent mountain 3 km south-southwest of the Pugelatz, but still in the same forest)
  • Pistolscher Berg ( 121.5  m ; southernmost mountain of the gravel moraine at the interface with the western Altmark forest hill country; 7 km northwest of Diesdorf )
    • West summit ( 117.8  m ; this is mostly indicated by name on a finer scale as Pistolscher Berg)
    • Preceptor mountain ( 115.2  m ) - southern foothills
    • Mark Auerbergland ( 103  m , less than 2 km northwest of the main mountain, by the L 266 / L 7 Bodenteich- Dähre separated at the interface to foothills of Pugelatz)
  • Fuchsberge ( 116  m ; 5 km east of Suhlendorf )
    • Mallätzer Berg ( 82  m ) - southwest foothills to the edge of the Uelzen basin
  • Güneitberg ( 114  m ; a good 4 km west-northwest of Clences; on a plateau with the Ledigsberg, 2.5 km south-southwest)
    • Kronsberg ( 105  m ; 2 km west)
  • Juchterberg ( 113  m ; 4.5 km east of Soltendieck)
  • On the Konau ( 111  m ; minimal knoll in the center of a plateau, a good 4 km south of the Pampower Berg and north of the Güneitberg, 1.3 km east-northeast of Vaddensen )
    • Spitzberg ( 107  m ; 2 km east-southeast and 4.5 km north-northwest of Clenzes)
    • Klosterberg Reddereitz ( 106  m ; a good 2 km south-southeast)

Lower Geest

To the east of the 50  m height line, the Hohe Geest merges into the Niedere Geest (642.6), which ends shortly before the Jeetzel after the boundary between the Lüneburg and Salzwedel leaves. Its assignment to the Ostheide may have historical reasons - according to historical understanding, the Jeetzel was the eastern border of the Drawehn - but this lowland, dominated by only a few individual peaks, shows significantly more affinity to the eastern and southern neighboring landscape of the Lüchower Lowlands (main unit 860). Only in the vicinity of Clenze do the crests become 60  m or higher. The only NSG in the Lower Geest, Schwarzer Berg near Krummasel , is only 3 hectares in size.

The southern border of the Lower Geest is the valley of the Wustrower Dumme, which runs from west to east, above its confluence with the Jeetze near Wustrow . In this valley, outside of the Ostheide, there are various nature reserves; to the west- south- west, the valley is bounded by the narrow Schnegaer Mühlenbachtal with the same name, 480 hectare nature reserve, which here represents a sharp southern border of the Hohe Geest.

Elevations of the Lower Geest

The following elevations of the Lower Geest are worth mentioning (the height above sea level in brackets ):

  • Mühlenberg ( 69  m ; north of Clenzes)
  • Fuchsberg (a good 60  m ; east of Clenzes ) - Niedere Geest
  • Nienhofer Forst ( 43  m ; extensive forest area immediately west of the coast )

Bodenteicher and Lüder Geest

The flat undulating Uelzen Basin (in the narrower sense, 643.0) is relatively sharply delimited to the east by the Hohe Geest and to the west by the north of the Lüß , in the center of the Hohe Heide (641). The latter rises almost peninsula-like into the south of the basin with its outermost eastern foothills of the Wierener Berge, up to 136  m high . The delimitation immediately east of the Wieren Mountains, immediately southeast of Wieren , where along the valley of the Aue (upstream), the geomorphological depression of the basin continues in a weaker form to the south, is less sharp . Historically, this depression is still part of the East Hanoverian gravel moraine, but on the one hand does not reach the heights of the Hohe Geest and leads to the other brook valleys. This western roofing of the Hohe Geest, which ends in the south at the watershed to the Ise or its receiving waterway Aller , is called Bodenteicher Geest (642.51). To the south of the eponymous spot Bad Bodenteich , this landscape frames a pronounced basin landscape around Lüder and on the upper reaches of the Aue, the Lüder Geest (642.52). The soil quality here differs noticeably from the neighboring landscapes and is comparable to that of the Wittingen Flottsandgebiet (642.3) in the south-south-east extension of the depression; accordingly, the Lüder Geest has been almost completely cleared.

To the southwest, the Lüder Geest borders on the northern moor areas of the Gose-Ise sand plain (641.4, part of the Südheide 641) with the nature reserve Schweimker Moor and Lüderbruch . A natural spatial singularity set the ground Teicher Seewiesen , just east of Bodenteich, at the junction of Lüder for soil Teicher Geest. In them the only 2.7 ha small NSG is dwarf birch bog in sheep Wedel .

Elevations of the ground pond Geest

The following surveys of the Geest ground ponds are worth mentioning (the height above sea level in brackets and the respective natural area below):

  • Schafwedeler Berg ( 91  m ; northwest of Schafwedels , 4 km east of Bad Bodenteich )
  • Wüllsenberg ( 89.9  m ; southernmost mountain of the Bodenteicher Geest on the watershed to the Aller, 6 km north of Wittingen )
    • Wittinger Berg ( 89  m ; northern foothills)
  • Schlaminsberge (almost 84  m ; west north of the Bodenteicher Geest, locking of the Uelzen basin)
  • Blauer Berg (almost 84  m ; extreme north of the Bodenteicher Geest, locking of the Uelzen basin)

Bohndorf terminal moraines and tongue basins in the north

To the northwest of the Göhrde, the Osthannoversche gravel moraine is continued by a narrow, branched terminal moraine system. At its base, on a hill north of Groß Thondorf , it reaches a height of 96  m above sea level. NHN . In the center of these Bohndorfer terminal moraines (642.7) lies the village of Bohndorf , today part of Altenmedingen . From here a spur branches off to the north and ends at the 90  m high Telegraphenberg southwest of Bleckedes . Between Ellringen and Thomasburg it is broken by the Neetze ; it separates the two tongue basins in the west and east. The main arm of the Bohndorfer terminal moraines, however, runs further northwest via Vastorf and finally almost northwards immediately east of Lüneburg . At the Steinhöhe , the eastern city hill of the district town, it reaches 86  m .

The western of the two tongue basins , the Neetzer basin (642.8) around Neetze or, above all, south and west of the village is still enclosed by wooded ridges. In particular, the western part between Boltersen , now the district of Rullstorf, in the north and (Vastorf-) Rohstorf in the south forms an independent sub-basin. Once again separated by wooded ridges is the flat, undulating extreme north-west around Rullstorf , which merges into the Elbe valley to the north without any elevation.

The eastern of the two tongue basins , the Dahlenburger basin (642.9) around Dahlenburg , is geomorphologically divided into a north and a south part. The flat undulating Dahlenburg Basin in the narrower sense in the south ends immediately north and east of the eponymous spot. The basin landscape around Barskamp in the north is separated from it by wooded hills and has a somewhat more turbulent relief overall.

The up to 107  m high peaks around the Bassenberg , which are about 6 km northeast of Dahlenburg, as well as the somewhat elevated basin landscapes around Nahrendorf (S) and around Tosterglope (N), which are bounded by them in the north, are also counted as natural areas on Blatt Lüneburg. However, in terms of elevation and relief, they correspond more to the neighboring landscape to the east, the Dannenberger Geest (642.52). The ridge and its north-eastern and northern continuation are wooded and are already on their western flank a step above the basin around Barskamp; Its northeastern drop to the Elbe Valley on Viehler Berg ( 61.1  m ) southeast of Alt Garges is even more significant . To the south, the ridge extends vaguely through wooded knolls on the watershed to the Neetze, which stretch as far as the Göhrde, which is why it stands to reason - contrary to Blatt Lüneburg - to regard this threshold as the north-western limit of the Drawehn or the Dannenberger Geest. As a result, the sum of the two basins also has a striking triangular shape and the sum of all three landscapes the shape of a trapezoid laid out in a line at Göhrde and Drawehn.

A natural sharp western border of the landscape forms today here at 42  m above sea level. NHN lying Elbe-Seiten-Canal from north of Edendorf , west of which in the area of the city of Lüneburg the forest is also breaking off. A sharp North limit these landscapes constituting the Scharnebecker Talsand- and dunes (876.40) containing the Lauenburg Elbtal (876.4) and hence the main unit Mittelelbe-Niederung lower (876) of the group Elbtalniederung initiates (87). The continuous forest cover of the dunes ends to the west only immediately northeast of Rullstorf.

Elevations of the Bohndorfer terminal moraines

The following elevations of the Bohndorfer terminal moraines are worth mentioning (the height above sea level in brackets ):

  • Sieckerberg ( 97.2  m ; 5.5 km southwest of Dahlenburg)
  • Hill in Wiebeck ( 96  m ; north of Groß Thondorf ; connected to the Göhrde to the southeast)
  • Fuchsberg ( 93  m ; northwest of the Wiebeck)
  • Wiernitzberg ( 92  m ; southeast foothills of the Bohndorfer terminal moraines, which lies immediately west of the Göhrde)
  • The birches ( 91  m ; immediately southeast of Barendorf , interface to the Grünhagen terminal moraines)
  • Telegraphenberg ( 90  m ; northern edge mountain of the Bohndorfer terminal moraines and northern eastern boundary of the Neetzer Basin, 4 km east of the Neetz ) - Bohndorfer terminal moraines
  • Steinhöhe ( 86  m ; eastern Stadtberg Lüneburg and northwestern edge of the Ostheide)
