The Ostseepokal 1989 or Baltic Cup 1989 was the 16th and final handball tournament for national teams. The game was played from January 17 to 22, 1989 in eleven German cities, spread across four different federal states .

The Soviet Union won the title for the seventh time with a 21:16 (8:11) win against the Federal Republic of Germany . The GDR took third place, ahead of Poland .

Venues

mode

In this event, eight teams played in two groups of four in the " everyone against everyone " mode .

The teams that finished 1st and 2nd in their group after the preliminary rounds qualified for the semi-finals. The losers in the semi-finals played a game for third place and the winners in the final for the title.

The teams in places 3 and 4 played the placement round for places 5 to 8.

The preliminary round began on January 17th with the opening game Czechoslovakia against Poland in Osterode . The tournament ended on January 22nd with the final between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Soviet Union in Dortmund .
