The school in Friedrichsdorf , named after Philipp Reis (1834–1874), is a cooperative comprehensive school with upper secondary school level (grades 5–13; possible degrees: secondary school certificate, secondary school certificate, high school diploma). It was founded in 1836 as Institut Garnier and is today the largest school in the Hochtaunus district. Philipp Reis was first a pupil and later a teacher at the previous institute of today's school. During his time as a teacher at the Garnier Institute, he developed and tried out the basics of the telephone. The school today is supported by the Hochtaunuskreis .

The school was named the Hessen Media School in 2005 , honored for outstanding media work and on September 7, 2007, was recognized by the state education authority for particularly successful school achievements . The latter honor is due to the excellent results of the students of the Philipp-Reis-Schule in exams across Hessen , for example the mathematics competition or the first round of the state high school diploma .

history

Philipp Reis (1834–1874), namesake of the school; Student and later teacher at the Garnier Institute

Foundation of the school, Institut Garnier (1836–1923)

On May 1, 1836, today's Philipp Reis School was founded by Louis Frédéric Garnier , which bore the French name “Maison d'Education à Friedrichsdorf, près Homburg-ès-Monts” (in German : “House of Education in Friedrichsdorf, next to Homburg " ). Philipp Reis was a student here and later a teacher. On the founding date, Garnier began teaching in Neugasse. He bought a house on Hauptstrasse because the house on Neugasse was getting too small. In 1842 Louis Frédéric Garnier bought another house nearby because the premises were no longer suitable for the large number of students; 13 years later again. In the years 1856 to 1858 Garnier built a central building; The entire facility of the Garnier Institute is now a cultural monument. The number of pupils rose steadily in the following years. After the Franco-German War in 1870/1871, Garnier had to fight against competition from several new state educational institutions. Nevertheless, he could not stop the decline of his school.

Relocation, securing the continuation of the educational institution (1923–1969)

The old building was no longer in use at the end of the 1923/1924 school year. At that time the building served as a storage room for a leather factory, but only for a short time. Between 1924 and 1925, classes were moved to the adjacent building. The remaining dozen students were housed in the old house. The following months consisted of efforts to secure the maintenance or continuation of the educational institution. On November 4, 1944, the school was relocated to the premises of the Hölderlin School in Bad Homburg. Due to the reopening of the school on October 30, 1945 negotiations with the military government began . The government approves the restart of the school on January 1, 1946. The number of students rose steadily.

Philipp Reis School in Hohen Weg (1969–2012)

Old building from 1969 with schoolyard and later added pavilions

In the 1960s, the first plans for a new school building in Friedrichsdorf were voiced, which could be realized through visits by ministers and state secretaries . The final building was discovered with the help of an architectural competition on Hohen Weg, so that the new building was occupied after a 15-month construction period at the turn of the year 1969/1970. The pupils from the Friedrichsdorf elementary school and from the formerly independent districts of Köppern, Burgholzhausen and Seulberg were able to move in. The school sponsorship was given to the district by the city of Friedrichsdorf . The buildings of the Institut Garnier, in which the school was housed until then, were later used for other purposes; temporarily from the Rhein-Main International Montessori School (RIMS).

The authorities intended to convert the school into a cooperative (= school type-related) comprehensive school in 1975 . On May 20, 1977, the school received a certificate with the name "Philipp-Reis-Schule - Gesamtschule des Hochtaunuskreis" . On this day, an independent grammar school branch was introduced, the grammar school upper level followed in 1983 and seven years later grammar school classes of the 5th and 6th grade.

Due to the steadily growing number of students, the school had to be supplemented by additional buildings. First there was a pavilion with two rooms on the other side of the school yard. In 1979 and 1985 , two more large buildings were built on the other side of the Hohe Weg, which was then closed to motor vehicle traffic. In 1998, a second container-style pavilion with four rooms followed in the eastern part of the schoolyard , and shortly before the move to the new building, a third pavilion. Until moving into the new building on Färberstrasse in February 2012, teaching was held in these three buildings plus the three pavilions. The Philipp Reis School comprised a total of 77 classrooms (eight of them in the pavilions), a forum and two sports halls. The designation of the classrooms consisted of the letter of the building or corridor, a number for the floor (0–3) and a two-digit room number; for the pavilions there was only a single-digit room number in addition to the letter.

The Philipp Reis School used a large and a small sports hall. The larger one ("GH1") was also used by Friedrichsdorf associations until the opening of the sports center on Schäferborn , the smaller one ("KH2") is primarily used by the neighboring Peter-Härtling-Schule ( elementary school ). There was also a sports field at the plantation.

The main building - the old building - was divided into three corridors ("A", "B" and "C"). High school, junior high and secondary school students from various years (mainly grades 7-10) were taught here. There were two so-called team areas in the A corridor (see → team concept ). In the C-corridor there were rooms for leisure activities, the student council , the school medical service and kitchen rooms and in the basement, among other things, the warehouse for class set books. From the B-corridor to the outer corridors, the teachers' room and library extended on the ground floor , and toilets on the south side towards the schoolyard . The cafeteria, a simple canteen , was set up on the north side of the Hohen Weg .

The two buildings on the other side of the Hohen Weg were referred to as D and E buildings. The D-Building formed the physics , biology , music and art areas and housed the classrooms for grades 5 and 6 on the upper floor for special needs and high school students. To the north of the D-building, the school had a school garden that was maintained by an appropriate working group (AG); south across a second schoolyard . In the entrance area there was a second staff room, a caretaker's office and an aquarium room, which was also looked after by a working group. The E-Bau housed the chemistry and most of the IT area as well as individual classrooms. It was built between the street and the D building, with half of the upper floor being elevated and allowing direct access from the street to the D building. Most of the high school students were taught in the pavilions.

In 2010 the Philipp Reis School had several rooms equipped with computers connected to the Internet. Five of these were pure computer rooms and several classrooms with a handful of devices each. According to its own information, the school housed a total of over 200 computers and also had laptops that are used in one class in class (see → “Laptop class” ). All computer rooms were gradually equipped with interactive whiteboards from 2005 . The music lessons was the 2000/2001 Bläserklassen (see → projects ) expanded.

After the school moved, the buildings have been empty since 2012 . The Hochtaunuskreis is the owner of buildings and land. After vandalism several times , they were fenced in and a security service hired. It is planned to build residential buildings for 260 residents on the 33,000 m² area, including single-family, double, terraced and multi-family houses. The demolition was delayed several times due to the various responsibilities and most recently because the investor only has legal security when the development plan comes into force . The city council , however, had concerns that there could be complaints about the noise level of the swimming pool, which is a large in its installation noise barrier would have required within the pool area; A change in the legal situation made this obsolete. A demolition is still not expected before December 2018 [out of date] .

New building on Färberstrasse (from February 2012)

A new building for the Philipp Reis School had been in planning since the 1990s at the latest, as the renovation of the existing buildings with partially environmentally hazardous building materials would have been uneconomical, and the structure of the building - several split buildings separated by the Hohe Weg, toilets only at the opposite ends of the elongated terrain - was extremely unfavorable. In addition, the number of pupils had grown steadily. Important steps have been postponed again and again, among other things due to a lack of funds from the district. Most recently there was a new building committee in which teachers also participated. The site chosen was a site between Färberstrasse (Schäferborn) and the Spießwald on the Friedrichsdorf – Friedberg railway line , which until then had been partly wooded, partly open and built on with a skate park . The new school building was planned from an ecological point of view and has, among other things, a large cafeteria , spacious sports facilities and theater stages. The first detailed plans were posted in the old school around 2006. Construction work began in 2009. In February 2012, the entire school community moved into the new building as part of a celebration as a common march . In addition, there was a football - tournament between teachers and part of the Baubelegschaft.

organization

In the 2006/2007 school year, the school comprised 42 classes plus five 11th classes as well as the 12th and 13th year. 115 pupils attended the latter year in the school year mentioned. In the 2007/2008 school year there are 44 classes (an increase of two classes compared to the previous year) plus five 11th classes and the 12th and 13th year. The school is attended by children and young people from the Friedrichsdorf districts , from Bad Homburg and from some communities in the Hintertaunus . They come from around 35 nations . The proportion of middle school students in the 2003/2004 school year exceeded that of female students. In the school year 2003/2004, the proportion of female pupils predominated in the upper secondary school. The designation of the school classes is made up of the year (5–12 due to the conversion to the eight-year high school (shortened course → G8); previously: 5–13), the school branch (upper level = T → tutor course / group; high school branch   = G ; Realschulzweig  = R; Hauptschulzweig  = H; support level  = F) and the class number (1, 2 etc.) together (example: 10G1). In the grammar school branch there are an average of five classes per year, in the secondary school branch three and in the main school branch two classes. In high school, the number of classes varies (actually rates ) due to the number of concluded upcoming advanced courses ; There are five to six classes per year.

School branches

The Philipp-Reis-Schule comprises a grammar school branch (since the 2006/2007 school year: grades 5–9; previously: 5–10) as a shortened course (G8) with an upper level (G8: grades 10–12; G9: 11–13 ), a secondary school branch (grades 7–10), a secondary school branch (grades 7–9) and a support level (grades 5–6).

High school branch

The grammar school classes (G8: grades 5–9, G9: 5–10) of the lower and middle school form with the upper school (G9: 11–13) a pure grammar school that leads to the Abitur (general higher education entrance qualification ) . A change from the nine-year high school (G9) to the eight-year (G8) took place in the 2006/2007 school year. In the meantime this has been reversed by a resolution of all committees, and there are again 9 grades in the grammar school branch (only the classes currently started for 8 years are "brought to the end"). The foreign language offer: from the 5th grade either English or French; from the 7th grade either English, French or Latin; as an offer from the 9th grade either Spanish or Latin.

Upper secondary school

The upper level of the Gymnasium (G8: grades 10–12; G9: 11–13) leads to the Abitur (general university entrance qualification) . Lessons in the one-year introductory phase are organized in almost all subjects as a class . Some subjects, such as music and sports, are offered as courses. The classes arise by the selection of two compartments orientation (orientation courses), which later in the qualification phase to power rates are. The learning to learn project is carried out on a few days in the first half of the introductory phase. A two-week internship takes place in the first year of the qualification phase . In addition, in the previous school year, i.e. in the introductory phase, the content of the internship in "Politics and Economics" is prepared for the economy. Students with Latin as a second foreign language acquire the Latinum (proof of Latin language skills) at the end of the introductory phase if they have at least sufficient performance .

Secondary school branch

The secondary school branch (grades 7-10) leads to middle school leaving certificate (Fachoberschulreife / Realschulabschluss) . In the 7th grade, French is offered as a second foreign language . In the 9th grade, Spanish and Latin can be chosen. (Latin is only taught if there is sufficient student requests.)

Main school branch

The secondary school branch (grades 7–9) leads to the secondary school leaving certificate ( vocational school qualification ) . The main focus of the main school branch at the Philipp-Reis-Schule is, among other things, that few teachers teach in one class. This means that the class teacher teaches more of the subjects. Furthermore, the emphasis was placed on the relation to practice. This means that the students in the 8th grade complete a block internship for three weeks and in the 9th grade for two weeks.

Funding level

The instruction in the support level (also: orientation level; grades 5–6) is initially organized as a class. Two of the three main subjects in the support level - mathematics and English  - are taught in courses (B +, B and C) from the second half of the 5th grade onwards, the former from the curriculum of the grammar school, the second that of the secondary school and the latter that of the secondary school corresponds. After attending the special level for two years, each student and parents will be given a recommendation for a specific branch.

Lessons and lunch care

Lessons at the Philipp Reis School take place mainly from the first to the sixth school period and last from 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (core time). The pupils in grades 7 to 10 have little lessons in the afternoons. In total, the school's schedule extends over twelve school hours, the last of which ends at 6:15 p.m. Working groups and other events take place in the afternoon after the lunch break from 2 p.m.

Cooperative learning (pedagogical concept) takes place at the Philipp Reis School . So frequently can partner and group work are the focus of subjects. Working with computers can also be used.

The lunchtime supervision includes homework supervision (for a fee) for pupils in the 5th to 7th grades, 26 different working groups (AG; status: 2007/2008 school year), an open music and art workshop, supervision in one room, and the option of taking of warm snacks in the cafeteria. The lunchtime care room is supervised by various staff, including high school students. The special room offers various opportunities to keep yourself busy.

On September 3, 2007, lunch was served for the first time at the Philipp Reis School. This has been offered since 1:15 p.m.

Facilities

IT equipment

As early as 1984, the decision was made to purchase the first computers for teaching at the Philipp Reis School. Eight Schneider CPC computers were used for the lessons, as they had, among other things, an integrated cassette drive for data storage. The computers were used for math and elective classes as well as work groups. In 1988, eight devices were ordered again, plus one device as a teacher's workstation, this time the HP 150 model from Hewlett-Packard , which had an integrated floppy disk drive and the MS-DOS operating system . In addition, three matrix printers and an A3 plotter were ordered. Another course with a focus on user software was offered. The few devices were not enough as interest in IT lessons continued to grow. In 1991 a second EDP room was set up in which another nine Schneider CPC computers were used. The subject matter of the two-year computer science course has been changed in lower secondary level . One change in the curriculum was, among other things, that the topic was no longer programming courses, but application-related content. This was a curriculum recommendation from the Hessian Ministry of Culture . Some other topics, such as user systems in the office and database systems , also became more important. The main focus in the upper secondary level was left on the development of IT content using a higher programming language in accordance with the course structure plans. In 1992 the computers in the second room could be integrated into a local network with a central server . For this purpose, all computers in the first EDP room were replaced by devices of the PC AT model, which were then also integrated into the local network. The local network enabled the subjects of data protection in networked systems and the fundamentals of network technology to be dealt with in computer science lessons .

Library

The library , located on the first floor of building D, has around 7,000 specialist and around 2,000 books for young people . In addition, it also has reference books , specialist dictionaries and a few computers. Since the beginning of 2005, a secretary from the Philipp Reis School has taken over the management of the library on an hourly basis per school day as well as some parents on a voluntary basis, as the full-time librarian has retired and the Hochtaunuskreis school authority is no longer able to provide additional funds to maintain the school library to provide. In addition, a librarian from the Friedrichsdorf public library took over the technical management. The procedure is financed proportionally by the school, the development association and the cafeteria association.

cafeteria

The school's own cafeteria is located directly at the main entrance. It was founded in 1992 and is open every morning from around 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cafeteria offers various types of sandwiches, fruit and various drinks. Between the start of the second major break (11:30 a.m.) and the end of the sixth lesson (1:20 p.m.), various snacks are offered on a daily basis . There is only one person who is permanently employed in the cafeteria association and who plans shopping alongside several volunteer organizers and helpers. Despite reasonable prices, the cafeteria was able to show surpluses that are used within the school. The cafeteria board of the association for the break care of the pupils of the Philipp-Reis-Schule e. V. consists of six adults, including two teachers from the Philipp Reis School.

School medical service

The school medical service can be found on the first floor of the main building , with two to six members on standby every school day. In emergencies, these members can be alerted by the secretariat by telephone . The members of the school medical service completed intensive training. The entire school medical service team meets every Wednesday to receive further training, among other things.

Transport links

Schoolchildren from the Friedrichsdorf districts of Köppern , Burgholzhausen , Seulberg and Dillingen are brought to and from school by two school buses free of charge at set times. The school can be reached from other locations, for example Bad Homburg, by train and bus. From the Friedrichsdorf train station , the school can be reached on foot in around fifteen minutes.

particularities

Team concept

The team concept at the Philipp-Reis-Schule describes working in a well-changed working atmosphere and the free exchange of information among the teachers. As few teachers as possible should teach a team "in order to be able to organize the pedagogical work and learning in projects more easily". This concept has existed since 2002. Each year of a school branch forms a team. Since the 2006/2007 school year, the school is to be gradually converted into a team school with the start of a new 5G class (high school classes in grade 5). The team concept is intended to convey a "feeling of home". The goals are to take responsibility for rooms, classmates and the learning atmosphere. In each team area there is a teacher support point in addition to classrooms, which has collections of materials. The teams are responsible for the design of their areas. So far, there are two team areas that are separated from the other classrooms by a partition.

"Laptop class"

In mid-November 2004 an 8th grade became the “laptop class”. This was an attempt. A more flexible use should be tried out with the laptops in several subjects. The class received 34 laptops for the experiment, including one for the class teacher. Furthermore, the test class received a video projector , a scanner , a printer and the corresponding software . The laptops, including the cupboards for storing them and the installations for wireless communication, cost the school authority almost 77,000 euros .

Special subjects

Special school subjects include performing games, Spanish, and the basics of culinary arts . All of these subjects - with the exception of performing games - are part of the compulsory elective courses and are intended for pupils in the 9th and 10th grades of the grammar school and secondary school branch. High school students and secondary school students in these grades are taught together in all the elective courses mentioned - with the exception of Spanish. At the Philipp-Reis-Schule there are also native speaking classes in Turkish .

Performing game

Performing games (DSP) was accepted as a subject for the 11th to 13th grades in 1996, making the Philipp-Reis-Schule a pioneer in all of Hesse. This subject can be chosen as a third artistic subject in the upper school level (11th to 13th grade). This subject is taught as a course in the upper level as a basic course with two or three hours per week.

Projects

Several projects are taking place at the Philipp Reis School. These include wind classes , learning and living democracy , learning to learn , mentoring , a cultural workshop and the learning partnership between the Philipp Reis School and Kaufhof AG .

Wind classes

A special project  - the wind classes  - is offered to the 5th and 6th grades , which represents an extended music lesson. The students participating in the project are taught in four instead of two lessons. In collaboration with the Music School Friedrichsdorf and music teachers of the Philipp-Reis-Schule was one with building wind orchestra and a jazz - band started. The Friedrichsdorf Music School provides the Philipp Reis School with teachers for individual and group lessons .

Learn and live democracy

The Learning and Living Democracy project takes place at the Philipp Reis School - one of around 160 model schools nationwide. This project is an intensive school development program (2002–2007). The federal and state governments work together for the project within the framework of the federal-state commission for educational planning and research funding (BLK). The project Learning and Living Democracy aims to promote the democratic competence of the students and the development of a democratic school culture.

Learn learn

The learning project , which has been taking place since 2003, aims to bring learning skills closer to the students . The first part of this project takes place in grades 5-8. The second part of this project is in the 11th grade and aims to familiarize students with the methods of scientific work .

Mentoring

The mentoring project is offered especially for high school students - a joint project between the Technical University of Central Hesse and the Philipp Reis School. Students from engineering and natural science courses express their experiences in a network with regard to the choice of course and the course of study and support the high school students.

Cultural workshop

The cultural workshop of the Philipp-Reis-Schule offers the students the opportunity to be creative for several hours in one afternoon. The aim of this workshop is to bring the schoolchildren closer to where they can spend the afternoon. There are two artistic areas in the workshop: the art atelier and the art studio. In the art studio, the students can paint, draw, digital image processing and create presentations, among other things . In addition to playing instruments in the music studio, they can sing, rehearse, compose and a lot more. Pupils who regularly participate in the cultural workshop may receive a note on the certificate. The workshop also offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary learning. Participation in the project is voluntary and there are no binding offers (in contrast to the working groups). Supervisors can be teachers as well as artists, musicians, craftsmen, scientists, but also older students, for example from their own senior level.

Learning partnership with Kaufhof AG

Since 2006 the Philipp-Reis-Schule has maintained a learning partnership with Kaufhof AG in Frankfurt-Nordweststadt . The selection of this school came about through the presentation of the school on the Internet. The contract between Kaufhof AG and the Philipp-Reis-Schule was signed on September 20, 2006 by State Secretary Joachim Jacobi, Managing Director Frank Bertsch and the headmaster Gernot Karner.

In February 2007, Kaufhof AG offered the school application training for several students in the 9th grade of secondary school. In addition, in mid-March 2007, a course was offered to students who had applied.

Sports

The Philipp-Reis-Schule regularly takes part in the competition youth trained for the Olympics in various sports . There are also several sporting activities at the school. These include tournaments for grades 5–8, the school sports day for grades 5–10 and the hour run on the last day of school. The Friedrichsdorf outdoor pool and the Seedammbad in Bad Homburg are also used for physical education .

International contacts (partner schools)

The Philipp Reis School maintains contacts with schools in Argentina , France and Russia and organizes student exchanges . In the past there were also connections to schools in England , the USA and Canada , but there is no longer any contact with them.

Argentina

The Philipp Reis School has been a partner of a German school in Buenos Aires , the Colegio Alemán , for several years . The exchange has been taking place since 2005 together with the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium (KFG) in Bad Homburg.

France

Since September 1998 the Philipp-Reis-Schule has been a partner of Sainte-Marie Bastide , a comprehensive school in Bordeaux . For the pupils in the 5th to 8th grades (in the 2007/2008 exchange year, grades 7–8) at the Philipp Reis School, an exchange with the local college is offered; for pupils in grades 10 and 11 (exchange year 2007/2008 grades 9-12) with the Lycée of the partner school. The exchange for the tenth and eleventh graders is project-oriented. As part of the city partnership between Friedrichsdorf and Houilles (near Paris ) there is also the possibility to take part in an exchange here.

Russia

Until 2003 there was the possibility of doing a student exchange with Russia. However, since Russian was hardly promoted at the Philipp Reis School, as the interest of the students decreased, the contact broke off. A registered association in Friedrichsdorf, consisting of two teachers from the Philipp Reis School, has been organizing educational project encounters in cooperation with a Russian autonomous and non-commercial organization for several years . Scholarships have been offered to schoolchildren since 2003 .

Others

Support association

The Friends of the Philipp Reis School Friends of the Philipp Reis School Friedrichsdorf / Ts. e. V. (formerly: Association of Friends and Supporters of the Philipp Reis School ) has existed since the 1960s. In 1990 this association was recognized as a non-profit organization and primarily supports the school in equipping it with teaching materials.
