Pieter Overd'hage

Pieter-Anastasius Pieterszoon Overd'hage de Zuttere (also Petrus Anastasius Hyperphragmus Gandavensis, Pierre Anastaise Hyperphragme Gentoise, Pieter Pietersz. Overd 'Hage, Pieter Doverdaghe, d'Overdage ; * 1520 in Gent ; † February 4, 1604 in Leiden ) was a spiritualistic and humanistic - Irish -minded theologian . He was close to the Mennonites , but tried to get jobs in the Reformed Church up to an old age, against much opposition . Overd'hage worked as a printer, teacher and preacher (reformed pastor ) on the Lower Rhine ( Wesel , perhaps Duisburg ), in Emden , Ghent and various cities in South Holland . The Ghent historian and poet Paul Rogghé (1904–1974) called him the “southern Dutch apostle of tolerance in the 16th century”.

Life

Pieter Overd'hage de Zuttere came from a family attested to in Ghent since the Middle Ages. His father's name was also Pieter, he had at least one brother.

Overd'hage received his humanistic training in Ghent from Georg Cassander (1513–1566), with whom he was later friends. "Petrus Doverdaghe de Gandavo" enrolled in 1536 among the divites (= richer) of the Paedagogium Falconis (Pedagogie De Valk) in Leuven and acquired the academic degree of a Magister in 1539/40. He also used the humanist name "hyperphragmus" (in ancient Greek ὑπέρ hypér = over; Dutch over and φραγμός phragmós = hedge; Dutch haag ).

Around 1551/52 Overd'hage “uut oorzaken der Religien (= because of religion)” had to flee from his “vaderlant” Ghent. In 1552 he was initially accepted in Wesel.

Stay in Geneva

Overd'hage stayed abroad in the following years. In Geneva he met Johannes Calvin and on October 27, 1553 was an eyewitness to the burning of Michel Servet . Pieter Overd'hage de Zuttere is said to have taken the copy of the Christianismi Restitutio , which was burned with Servet, from the flames. He prepared a detailed report in which the behavior of Guillaume Farel is described. Three decades later, he was stunned by the cruelty of the execution. Printer on the Lower Rhine in Wesel

In Wesel, "Peter Overd 'Haeg (h) e" de Zuttere set up a private press and began printing in 1555 at the latest. On July 26, 1555, he had to prove to the Wesel Council a guarantee of 500 gold guilders in the event that he would print unauthorized books. Of the English-language Wesel prints of this time, Overd'hage de Zuttere works by Bartholomew Traheron ( Benthalmai Outis) († around 1558) and Robert Pownall (1520–1571) are ascribed; Traheron and Perrucelle were expelled from Wesel on March 1, 1557.

At the beginning of 1557 the Flemish humanist and Reformed theologian Jan van Utenhove the Elder sent Ä. van der Gracht sent his Dutch translation of the New Testament to various learned friends with the request for an assessment, among them were "Petrus Douerdaghe" in Wesel, Heinrich Bullinger , Georg Cassander and Joost Lambrecht.

Overd'hage anonymously reprinted the book Die Slotel van dat Secreet des Nachtmaels onses Heren Jesu Christi by the Wassenberg preacher and Baptist Heinrich Roll († 1534) around 1558 . He is also identical to "Petrus Gandavus" (Pieter von Gent), who with Johannes Anastasius (Jan Gerritsz. Pieter Overd'hage probably stayed in Wesel or on the Lower Rhine until he published his estate after the death of his friend, the merchant and mystic Mathijs Wier († 1560). Overd'hage seems to have lived in Heidelberg or the Electoral Palatinate for a short time . Dirck Mullem joined his office and in 1569 organized a reprint of Wier's work in Wesel.

Auditor and printer in Emden

Between 1570 and 1574 Overd'hage can be identified as a predicant (“Hipofraghmus, Petrus, van Gendt”) of the Dutch refugee community and printer in Emden, presumably he had moved there a few years earlier. During his stay in Emden, he translated two letters from Sebastian Franck (1499–1542) from Latin and High German into Middle Dutch and published them. Overd'hage can also translate Francks Een stichtelijk Tractaet van de Werelt des Duyvels Rijk (= An edifying treatise on the world, the devil's empire) , which according to the title page was translated into Dutch as early as 1565 and not in the original High German version is preserved.

In October 1573 there were conflicts over his preaching. Hyperphragmus was critical of infant baptism. The Walloon pastor in Emden Johannes (Jean) Polyander d. Ä. van den Kerckhoven (1535–1598) accused him of heresy. On the Sunday after Christmas 1573, Pieter Overd'hage preached in the Great Church of Emden . The congregation was presented with five formulated points of contention in January 1574, and Overd'hage in turn accused Polyander of teaching misconduct in 40 articles. In March Overd'hage took part in the Mennonite service and represented a sick preacher there, in May 1574 he left the city and moved to Rotterdam .

Teacher in Rotterdam

Overd'hage's request to be employed as a preacher in Rotterdam was not granted. While the magistrate supported him as a counterweight to the strictly Calvinist predicant Aegidius Johannis Frisius (Gillis Jansz. De Vries) († 1594), the consistory knew how to prevent his appointment. He was accused of dealing with "dooperschen, swevende geesten en libertinen (= Anabaptists, swarming spirits and libertines )"; the first synod in Dordrecht on June 15, 1574 declared him to be "suspect". In December 1574, Philips van Marnix conveyed the advice of Prince William I of Orange by letter not to employ Overd'hage on a permanent basis. In 1575/76, "Pierre Anastaise Hyperphragme, Gentoise" maintained a teaching institute and school in the city; Dirck Mullem published Overd'hage's bilingual Flemish - French grammar in Rotterdam , the revision of a work by Noël de Berlaymont († 1530).

Return to the Reformed Republic of Ghent

After the “ Ghent pacification ”, a reformed city republic was formed in Ghent in 1577. Arrested in Oudenaarde

After the end of the reformed Ghent Republic and the handover of the city to Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma , in 1584, Pieter Overd'hage had to leave the city again.

Stay in Leiden

On September 6, 1586, "Petrus Overdagius" enrolled at the Theological Faculty of the University of Leiden - perhaps as a printer, if the entry is not a relative. Removed from the parish in Hoogmade

Printer brand

Overd'hages de Zuttere printer's stamp depicts a cornfield from which Christ on the cross rises to the left , underneath is the word " Veritas (= truth)". In the middle stands a reaper, over whose head a banner with the inscription " Sat quercus " hovers. The reaper turns away from the tree of temptation surrounded by a snake (right), under which the word " umbra (= darkness)" is written. Cornfield and tree represent the new and the old faith. Pieter Overd'hage's first wife was named Josijntgen (Josina) Pietersdaughter. Her sons Abel (* around 1560; † after 1604) and David Overd'hage (* before 1579; † after 1612) came from her marriage. The daughter Sara Overd'hage (* before 1565; † between 1582 and 1604), married to Carel Wijst, lived in England and had a daughter Sara Wijst (* around 1582; ​​† after 1604).

Pieter Overd'hage was the second marriage (⚭ before 1582) to Emerentia (Laurentia) d 'Mets (* before 1565; † between 1591 and 1604), daughter of Ludewijk (Louis) De Mets (van Metz) from Oudenaarde, who was much younger than him.
