Bartholomew
Bartholomäus is a male personal name and first name. In Germany in particular, Bartholomäus is also used as a family name.
Origin and meaning
Bartholomaeus is the Latin variant of the Aramaic and Hebrew name (ܒܪ ܬܘܠܡܝ) Bar-Tolmai (ברתלמי), "son of Tolmai".
The Apostle Bartholomew
Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles ( Mk 3,18 EU ) and is venerated as a saint and martyr in the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches .
Biblical studies see the same person in Nathanael and Bartholomew. Jesus Christ describes him as a “man without falsehood” ( Jn 1.47 EU ). Some traditions also see him as the bridegroom of the wedding at Cana ( Jn 2.1-11 EU ). Only after being called to be an apostle was he called Bartholomew ( Mt 10.3 EU ). According to tradition, he preached in Persia, possibly also in India, where he is said to have left a Hebrew copy of the Gospel of Matthew . In part, he is also credited with spreading the Gospel in Egypt and Armenia.
He died a martyr's death in 71 AD, presumably in the city of Albanopolis in Albania. According to tradition, his death was brought about by the skin being peeled off . His iconographic saint attribute is therefore the flapper knife used.
Adoration
Around 580 the relics of St. Bartholomew on the island of Lipari in Italy and in 838 during a Saracen invasion from there to Benevento . Emperor Otto II is said to have brought them to Rome in 983, where they were embedded in the altar in San Bartolomeo all'Isola on the Tiber Island. In 1238 St. Bartholomäus became the main patron saint of the Frankfurt Cathedral , where the saint's skull had been brought under Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. Furthermore, relics of Bartholomew can be found in several places, e.g. B. in the Andechs monastery in Bavaria.
In Michelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, the face on the skin worn by Bartholomew is considered the artist's self-portrait.
The feast of St. Bartholomew in the liturgy is August 24th . Until 1955 it had a vigil the day before, August 23rd . There are several farmer rules for the day :
- "How Barthel behaves is in order all autumn."
- "If the storks stay above Bartholomae, there will come a winter that doesn't hurt."
