When he had successfully completed the U-17 European Football Championship in Italy in May 2005 as a team captain , he got a professional contract until July 2008 after his return to Switzerland.

FC Basel

He made his 29-minute debut in the Swiss Super League on April 15, 2006 in the championship game against Neuchâtel Xamax . On October 22, 2006, he scored his first goal for FC Basel in the championship game against FC St. Gallen . This hit was named the “goal of the preliminary round”. For FC Basel, he wore the jersey with the number 17.

In the course of this season he became a regular player and scored seven goals in the nine games in March and April 2007 alone. As part of the tenth night of Swiss football on May 29, 2007 in the Kursaal Bern, Rakitić was voted the best newcomer of the 2006/07 season . He also received the goal of the year award.

FC Schalke 04

Ivan Rakitić (2010)

For the 2007/08 season Rakitić moved to FC Schalke 04 and signed a contract there for four years. In his first Bundesliga game on August 10, 2007 against last year's champions VfB Stuttgart , he scored a goal. After the 16th matchday of the season, Rakitić drew attention to himself with an unauthorized disco visit. He was then suspended from the squad on the day of the UEFA Champions League game against Rosenborg Trondheim , which was decisive for staying in European competition . In the Bundesliga, however, he fought for a regular place and played all 17 preliminary round matches for his club.

The following season he played 23 times in the league. Schalke finished the season in eighth place. For the new season, Felix Magath was signed as coach and manager . This signed many new players and largely rebuilt the squad. Nevertheless, Rakitić was able to prevail under him and played his best season for Schalke in 2009/2010 . They became runner-up behind FC Bayern Munich . The next season began for Rakitić with ankle ligament problems, because of which he missed the first game. He lost his place in the attacking midfield (the "10") to Jurado , who was newly signed in the summer, and could no longer get beyond the role of a rotation player.
