Horgau is a municipality in the Swabian district of Augsburg . The place of the same name is both the capital and the seat of the municipal administration.
geography
Geographical location
Horgau is located in the Augsburg - Western Forests nature park , approx. 17 km west of Augsburg . The Roth flows through Horgau , which then crosses the Rothsee and flows into the Zusam after Zusmarshausen .
Landscapes and parts of the municipality
The municipality consists of 3 districts and has 8 officially named municipality parts :
- Main town, parish village and district Horgau with the church village Bieselbach, the hamlets Herpfenried and Schäfstoss and the desert Ziegelhauserhof
- Kirchdorf and district Auerbach with the hamlet Lindgraben
- Kirchdorf and district Horgauergreut
history
Until the church is planted
Around 5,000 year old tools such as burins, blades and arrowheads were found in the community area, and bronze objects around 3,000 years old were found in further excavations. Burial mounds from the time of the Celts can still be found.
King Otto I is said to have set up his last marching camp in the Horgau area on the night of August 9-10, 955, before he moved on to Augsburg with his army for the decisive battle against the Hungarians, the famous Lechfeld Battle .
Some traditions suggest that there have been settlements in the Horgau area since the 8th century. The first documented mentions of goods in Horgau have been there since 1126.
On January 26, 1462, soldiers from Augsburg destroyed the towns of Horgau and Horgauergreut . The reason: At that time, Horgauergreut belonged to the Augsburg citizen Hans Nördlinger. But he stood on the side of Duke Ludwig of Bavaria , against whom the Augsburgers were just taking the field. Both villages fell victim to the militant Augsburgers.
In the summer of 1632, during the Thirty Years' War , the Catholic priest Martin Maxilla was slain in an attack by Sweden .
Horgau gained sad fame on May 17, 1648. On this day, the last retreat battles of the Thirty Years' War took place first in Herpfenried and then on a road east of Horgau. General Peter Melander Count von Holzapfel , who fled the Swedes and French with the Imperial troops , was able to leave Zusmarshausen in the direction of Augsburg. In Horgau he was fatally wounded around noon. He was transported to Augsburg. 2,000 imperial soldiers were killed. A painting with burning buildings from this time can be seen in the Horgau main altarpiece - probably as a reminder to peace.
At the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries, several baroque churches and chapels were built in the Horgau municipality , which were inaugurated on October 11, 1735.
In the years 1771/72 there was a terrible epidemic in Horgau, a kind of pulmonary plague that claimed many victims. The community of Horgau was established in 1818 .
20th century
From December 5, 1903, there was an intermediate station on the Augsburg – Welden railway line in Horgau , which was operated in passenger and freight traffic until 1986. Today there is a cycle path on the railway line.
From 1862 to 1929 Horgau belonged to the district office of Zusmarshausen and from 1929 to the district office of Augsburg , which from 1939 was called the district of Augsburg .
As in many villages in the Augsburg area, at the end of the Second World War there was a branch of the Dachau concentration camp in Horgau , where prisoners worked for the Reichsbahn and the Messerschmitt works.
Incorporations
The municipality of Horgau was expanded to include Horgauergreut on January 1, 1971 and Auerbach on July 1, 1972. On May 1, 1978 it was dissolved in the course of the regional reform and incorporated into Zusmarshausen .
After years of resistance from the population, Horgau became an independent municipality again through the judgment of the Bavarian Constitutional Court on October 27, 1983 . The newly elected local council began its work on May 1, 1984.

coat of arms
Blazon : "Split, in front in silver, on a green base two green reed stalks with black cobs, behind in blue two silver tips decorated with silver roses."
Explanation: The coat of arms contains symbols that refer partly to the name and partly to the history of the place. The name Horgau is derived from the Old High German word "horo", "Horaw" which means mud, swamp floor; As a symbol for this interpretation , the cattail found its way into the municipal coat of arms. From the end of the 15th century, a branch of the family of the Augsburger was patrician of Rehlingen as a basic rule with Horgau and the belonging to the municipality Pfarrdorf Bieselbach connected and named after his possessions "by Horau and cycling". A tomb in the Horgau parish church and paintings on the historically valuable Bieselbach carved altar keep the memory of this family alive, which had two rose-studded silver tips in their family coat of arms; These silver tips document in the municipal coat of arms the longstanding close relationship between the municipality and the old local nobility. |

Community partnerships
In 1990 a partnership was entered into with the municipality of Bundenthal . Both communities had experienced similar things through the territorial reform of the respective country. During the struggle to regain independence for the communities, many contacts arose between citizens and associations. In the new development area “north of Bahnhofstrasse” one of the two streets is called “Bundenthaler Weg”.
Attractions
- Catholic parish church of St. Martin : The choir dates from the 2nd half of the 15th century. The tower was built around 1620, the nave around 1675/80. It was extended in 1715/20. A bronze figure of the Mother of God was made around 1850.
- Bieselbacher Altar : 'It is housed in the Franz Xaver Chapel, which was built around 1747 in the Bieselbach district. The altar was carved in 1510 by the Ulm sculptor Daniel Mauch . In the middle picture he shows the Holy Kinship, i.e. Maria, St. Anna, St. Joseph and in the background the three spouses of St. Anne, namely Joachim, Cleophas and Salomas. In the predella, the figure of David's father Jesse was reworked as Saint Francis Xavier in 1756. From this it is concluded that this altar came to Bieselbach from the Rehlingen castle chapel in Horgau around this time.
- Hallstatt burial mound field: In the Horgau basin there are several groups of burial mounds (over 70 burial mounds ). These are cemeteries (necropolises) from the Hallstatt period (750–450 BC). The barrows are silent witnesses to a very old custom. The dead were buried with the grave goods in wooden burial chambers that were covered with earth until a hill was formed. The burial mounds are well preserved in the protective forest at Horgau train station.
