Sint-Michielsgestel ( listen ^{? / I} ) is a place and a municipality in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant . Michielsgestel is home to the Instituut voor Doven ( German Institute for Taube ) and the De Ruwenberg conference center.  

Herlaer

Sint-Michielsgestel is first mentioned when the fiefs “Herlaer” and “Gestel” were merged around 1314, from which Sint-Michielsgestel finally emerged. Herlaer himself is first mentioned in 1142 and was a fiefdom of the cathedral chapter of Liège.

Beekvliet

The church high school Beekvliet was located in Sint-Michielsgestel. During the Second World War it was used as a hostage camp, as was the seminary in hair . On May 4, 1942, 450 Dutch people were interned in Beekvliet, and more hostages were added later. There the hostages discussed the renewal of Dutch society and overcoming the pillars ( verzuiling ). The two writers Simon Vestdijk and Anton van Duinkerken took part in it; Nikolaas Tinbergen , who later won the Nobel Prize, was also imprisoned here from September 9, 1942.

Today Beekvliet is an independent grammar school with around 800 students.
