The Stockholm School of Economics ( Swedish : Handelshögskolan i Stockholm (HHS), the official English name: Stockholm School of Economics ) is a private, international business school in Stockholm with nearly 1,900 students and 300 academic staff.
The commercial college was founded in 1909 as a foundation to strengthen education in economics in Sweden. The HHS became known for its famous economists Eli Heckscher , Bertil Ohlin and Gunnar Myrdal . After the replacement of the German-born President Rolf Wolff, who was only appointed in 2012, because of a scandal surrounding the appointment of a dean with a criminal record for insider trading in May 2013, the current President is the economist and former Vice President Lars Strannegård.
The university is very selective when it comes to allocating study places: In 2012, 3,261 students applied for one of 150 places in the university's Master of Science programs. For residents of the European Economic Area and Switzerland, all Bachelor and Master courses are free of charge.
The university cooperates with a number of renowned universities and business schools: In addition to the Ivy League universities Columbia University , Cornell University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , these include, for example, the London School of Economics and Political Science , HEC Paris and the National University of Singapore . In addition, “Double Degrees” with the Luigi Bocconi University of Economics in Milan, the University of St. Gallen and the French Grande Ecole SciencesPo are possible at Master’s level .
The Employment Report 2014 shows that 91% of the graduates of a Master of Science program found employment within three months of completing their studies, 80% before completing their studies. Employers included Blackrock , Google , McKinsey & Company and Spotify , among others . 62% of graduates stay in Sweden after graduation, 8% start work in Germany and 7% in the UK. For 1 year after graduation, the average salary is $ 73,364.
The university also focuses heavily on entrepreneurship . For example, she is a founding member of the “Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship”, an association of five leading Stockholm universities from the fields of medicine, technology, economics & management, and design & humanities. The students therefore have the opportunity to take elective courses in the field of entrepreneurship, for example "Finance for Start-ups", "Business Model Innovation" and "Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries". In addition, the SSE founded the incubator “SSE Business Lab” in 2001 , from which (as of 2013) 91 active companies with 1,100 employees and a turnover of 1.9 billion SEK (approx. 200 million €) arose. The payment service provider “ Klarna ” is one of the best-known start-ups .
history
The university was founded in 1909 on a private initiative in response to the challenges of industrialization and the resulting need for well-trained business professionals. The basis was a substantial donation from Knut Agathon Wallenberg in 1903. The name handelshögskola was chosen as a translation of the German term Handelshochschule . In Germany, several educational institutions had previously chosen this name, following the example of the Leipzig Graduate School. The term Högskola was then regularly used for higher educational institutions outside the university area. An important example was the (Kungl.) Tekniska Högskolan , which had this name since 1877.
