al-Ahqaf

Al-Ahqaf ( Arabic الأحقاف al-Aḥqāf  'The Dunes') is the 46th sura of the Koran , it contains 35 verses . The sura belongs to the end of the third Meccan period (620–622), with the exception of verses 10, 15–18 and 35, whichare dated tothe Medina . The title refers to verse 21. After the introductory Basmala there are the letters Ḥā Mīm , which are also at the beginning of the preceding suras 40, 41, 42, 43, 44 and 45.

As a whole, the sura consists of different independent blocks. The first twelve verses extol the divine origin of the Koranic message, with a reference in verse 10 to a "witness of the children of Israel". This is generally believed to be ʿAbdallāh ibn Salām , a Jew from the Qainuqa tribe in Medina who joined the Prophet Mohammed . Here are some references to the eschatological reward of good works, the duty to honor the parents, the prophet Hūd as "brother of the ʿĀd who warned his people at the dunes", the conversion of a host of jinn . Finally, the Meccans are exhorted to believe in the resurrection of the dead, and Mohammed is called to be patient.
