Al-Hujurat ( Arabic الحجرات al-Ḥuǧurāt  'The chambers') is the 49th sura of the Koran , it contains 18 verses . Its title refers to verse 4. It wasproclaimedin Medina , probably after the pilgrims ' visit ( ʿUmra ) to Mecca in 629 or even after the conquest of Mecca in January 630.

The sura contains rules of conduct in which the newly converted Muslims, especially the Bedouins , are called upon to deal with the Prophet in a respectful and cautious manner and to behave peacefully with one another. They are often addressed with the formula “O you who believe”. Verse 13 speaks out against the meaning of descent and tribal affiliation: “O people, we created you from a male and a female, and we have made you into associations and tribes so that you can get to know one another. The most respected of you by God, that is the most God-fearing of you. ”The following verse, which is addressed to the Arab Bedouins, posits a difference between the acceptance of Islam and the acceptance of faith ( īmān ).
