Tiësto
Tiësto [ ˈtiɛsto ] (born January 17, 1969 in Breda ; real name Tijs Michiel Verwest [ ˈtɛi̯s miˈxiːɫ vərˈʋɛst ]) is a Dutch DJ , music producer and Grammy award winner who celebrated his breakthrough in 2000 and has since become one of the most famous DJs worldwide applies. Tiësto is also considered a kind of mentor for many musicians. During her ascent he supported Martin Garrix , Hardwell , Mike Williams and KSHMR, among others .
Career
Until 2001: musical beginnings
Tiësto became interested in the work of the disc jockey (DJ) at the age of eight. In his youth he played as resident DJ of the small club Spock in Breda, where his later friend and also DJ Hardwell grew up. There he was discovered by trend scouts from Rotterdam .
In the mid-1990s he released self-produced tracks under various artist names and on various labels . In 1997 he and his friend and production partner Arny Bink founded the now legendary Black Hole Recordings label . Tiësto's big break came in 2000 with the remix of Delerium's Silence (voiced by Sarah McLachlan ), which reached number three on the Billboard charts .
After a few mix CDs , his debut album In My Memory was released in 2001 . The album was a huge success, also in the US . In the Dutch album charts, it moved up to the top quarter and reached gold status .
2002–2004: Number one DJ and increasing popularity
In 2002 he was voted the best DJ in the world for the first time by readers of the British DJ Mag . In 2003 and 2004 he defended his first place. In 2003, with Tiësto In Concert, he was the first DJ to play records in front of 25,000 spectators in a stadium ( GelreDome in Arnhem , Netherlands).
On August 13, 2004, he accompanied the invasion of the athletes into the stadium at the Olympic Summer Games in Athens . This is probably the biggest gig by a DJ to date, with millions of viewers around the world . The performance was decisive for Martin Garrix 's beginning of a music career. In the course of the performance, Tiësto released the album Parade of the Athletes , which is a mix album of current and past commercial successes.
On April 6, 2004, he released his second studio album Just Be . This reached the top of the Dutch album charts and was also successful beyond the borders. The singles Love Comes Again , Traffic and Just Be reached top three positions in the Netherlands and placed in other European single charts. In addition, these tracks developed into trance hymns.
He also organized Tiësto In Concert 2 , where he put on a huge show in front of 70,000 fans. Tiësto had over 100 gigs in 2004, including regular appearances in well-known clubs such as Amnesia in Ibiza and Gatecrasher in Sheffield . Also in 2004, Queen Beatrix honored him for his services to the Dutch dance scene with the award of the Order of Orange-Nassau with the rank of officer. The honor is similar to the award of the Federal Cross of Merit in Germany.
2005–2008: Clublife tour and podcast
In 2005 he had a solo appearance at Disneyland Paris and four concerts in the USA ( Los Angeles , Washington, DC , Miami and New Orleans ) as part of the Tiësto In Concert USA tour. In the same year the Tiësto CEE Tour followed in 2005 while visiting cities such as Prague , Bratislava , Zagreb , Belgrade and Budapest . In 2006 Tiësto took part in the new edition of the Love Parade .
Since April 6, 2007 Tiësto has had a weekly radio program on the Dutch radio station Radio 538 . In "Tiësto's Club Life" he presents the latest electronic dance music and in the "15 Minutes of Fame" gives young DJs a platform to present themselves to a broad audience. Originally the show was supposed to be called "Club Nouveau", but was renamed after five shows due to name disputes. An international version in English is also available as a podcast . In April 2011 Tiësto changed radio stations and moved his show "Club Life" to 3FM . This has been appearing for a long time in individual one-hour versions on Internet platforms such as Soundcloud and YouTube.
In 2008 Tiësto played as the new resident DJ every Monday between July 7th and September 22nd at Privilege . In 2008 and 2009 Tiësto was voted best DJ in the world at the International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. He describes his attitude towards his work as a DJ with: "I feel the energy of the crowd and try to give it back to form a community."
2009 to 2010: Musical Freedom & The Greatest DJ Of All Time
In August 2009 he started his own label "Musical Freedom" after separating from his previous label " Black Hole Recordings ". Tiësto believed that his music was heading in a new direction, much more towards progressive and electro house instead of trance, which no longer coincided with the direction of Black Hole Recordings . With this record label he also released the singles of other artists, including Dzeko & Torres and MOTi .
On October 6, 2009, he released his fifth studio album, Kaleidoscope . With this once again reached the charts of numerous European countries. The songs I Will Be Here with Sneaky Sound System and Feel It in My Bones with Tegan and Sara were already released in advance . Both could reach the single charts of several countries. Parallel to the album, the song Escape Me was released as a single. Further collaborations for the album took place with Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris , among others .
In March 2010 the song Who Wants to Be Alone was released as the last single from Kaleidoscope . This was recorded together with the Canadian singer Nelly Furtado and was able to advance to number one in Poland. In August 2010 Tiësto released a remix version of the album on which, among other things, remixes by artists such as Avicii , Mysto & Pizzi and Ferry Corsten .
In April 2010 he released the track Feel It together with the Three 6 Mafia , Sean Kingston and Flo Rida . In contrast to his previously more trance-heavy style, this one could be classified much more in the area of electro house. The track developed into one of his most successful releases to date. While there was no chart placement in his home country, Feel It reached 21st place in Germany and 20th in Austria. Furthermore, Tiësto achieved a placement in the USA for the first time.
In 2010 he hung up on the Love Parade in Duisburg. Until 2015 he was considered one of the best-paid DJs in the world with an annual income of $ 22 million. In 2015, Calvin Harris surpassed him with an income of $ 60 million. In February 2011 he was voted “The Greatest DJ Of All Time” by the world's largest DJ magazine MixMag. Many more awards followed. To this day, these number over 50.
2011 to 2012: C'mon (Catch 'Em by Surprise)
On February 19th, 2011 the track C'mon (Catch 'Em by Surprise) was released . He had previously produced this as an instrumental track together with the American musician Diplo . The vocal version was created in collaboration with the rapper Busta Rhymes . The song developed into one of his most successful tracks and was able to reach high chart positions in Germany, the United Kingdom and a number of other countries.
At the same time, Tiësto published the song Zero 76 together with Hardwell , who calls him an idol . Decisive for the title was the telephone code "076" of her hometown Breda. Tiësto made it possible for him to make a guest appearance at one of his concerts. They also performed at the Tomorrowland Festival in Belgium in 2014. Their joint set was viewed several million times on YouTube within a very short time. Shortly afterwards, Maximal Crazy appeared . This developed into a decisive success in the EDM scene.
In the following year he published the second part of his Club Life compilation series with the addition Volume Two Miami . On this one could find a new production called We Own the Night . The song was created with the American DJ and producer Wolfgang Gartner . A vocal version was made together with the British singer Luciana Caporaso. Chasing Summer is another new production.
Towards the end of 2012, Tiësto released the song Make Some Noise , with which he further distinguished himself from his earlier trance style. One remix by Dyro in particular caught the eye. A vocal version was created with singer Ben McInerney of the New Navy music group. At the same time he collaborated with Showtek on the song Hell Yeah . A remix of her song Get Loose reached a place in the Dutch singles charts.
2013 to 2014: A Town Called Paradise
In the spring he produced the song United together with the DJs and producers Quintino and Alvaro as the anthem for the Ultra Music Festival 2013. In the course of the year, a number of other productions appeared on his record label. Behind these are among other things collaborations with MOTi , Dyro and Nari & Milani, among others . All of them represented the electro-house sector. He also produced several remixes with Blasterjaxx and Moska, among others .
In the summer of 2013, Tiësto announced that a new studio album was planned for 2014. The style of music moves between dance pop and progressive house . He said that in an interview with DJ Mag he said that he would see his role as Tiësto Trance-Guy as a tale and with the new, young up-and-coming stars of the scene, who would see him as a kind of "godfather" want to be connected. At the Tomorrowland Festival 2013 he played selected songs from the album for the first time.
The first pre-release single, Red Lights , was released in February 2014. The song is sung by Michel Zitron, John Martin's studio partner . The track hit the charts in a variety of countries. It reached the top 10 in Great Britain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Australia. Studio versions of some of the other songs that will be featured on the album have also appeared on the Internet. Among them are a collaboration with Icona Pop and the song Footprints (Around the World) , which is sung by Cruickshank and which has long been traded as the second single. As a second release, the track Wasted was released as a single with the singer Matthew Koma . On April 25, 2014, the official music video for Wasted , the release date of A Town Called Paradise and the track list were released.
Also in 2014 he remixed the ballad All of Me by the US R&B singer John Legend , which reached high chart positions in autumn 2013. The remix was released as a single track on his 45th birthday in January 2014 and was able to bring the song back into the singles charts as "Tiësto's Birthday Treatment" and even reached the top of the official charts in some countries with the remix. His version of the song received a 2015 Grammy Award for best remix recording of the year. Other nominees included Audien and Robin Schulz .
Furthermore, in the winter of 2014 the official tracklist of the studio album United We Are by the Dutch DJ Hardwell , with whom he has performed several times during his career (including at Tomorrowland ), was announced. Among the songs was the song Colors , in which Hardwell and the Swedish singer-songwriter Andreas Moe participated. At the Ultra Music Festival, the DJ played a wide variety of new songs. Among them was a new recording of the song L'amour toujours by Gigi D'Agostino , which he recorded with Dzeko & Torres , the long-awaited single The Only Way Is Up with Martin Garrix and a collaboration with MOTi.
2015: Collaborations with newcomers
In the course of 2015, a number of collaborations appeared through his record label. It started with the song Secrets , which was recorded together with the American producer KSHMR and the singer Vassy . At the Ultra Music Festival in March 2015 Tiësto brought KSHMR onto the stage, with which he revealed his identity for the first time. Secrets was able to reach the charts in Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Not only commercially, but also in discotheques and festivals, it achieved great popularity.
On May 4, 2015, he released the song The Only Way Is Up . This was created in collaboration with the youngster Martin Garrix , who was inspired by Tiësto to pursue a music career. For Garrix, The Only Way Is Up laid the foundation for a musical reorientation in the field of progressive house. The song was able to achieve high chart positions in the download charts of several countries. The success was also underlined on Beatport. At the same time, the track acted as a promotional song for 7 Up , which is why two stages with different light colors were set up in the desert, on which Tiësto and Garrix compete against each other.
The song Split (Only U) followed with the Chainsmokers . The melody of the title is based on the song Only U by Ashanti from 2004. Within a very short time, the big room song rose to number one on the Beatport charts, where it stayed for several days. The song only entered the charts in France and Belgium. On the other hand, the video caused a stir, where the Chainsmokers can be seen kidnapping and murdering Tiësto, whereupon he takes revenge as the undead.
The future house track Chemicals with Don Diablo and singer-songwriter Thomas Troelsen is a late summer hit. Like its predecessors, the song reached the top of the Beatport charts. Wombass followed in November 2015. This was produced together with Oliver Heldens . A vocal version appeared with Natalie La Rose under the title The Right Song and reached the singles charts of the United Kingdom. He also premiered a remix for Faded by Alan Walker and the song Faster Than a Bullet , which is another collaboration with Vassy, at the Ultra Music Festival .
2016: AFTR: HRS & appearance as Marshmello
At the end of March 2016, the song Making Me Dizzy was released , which was created in collaboration with Bobby Puma and producer Maarten Vorwerk . Before that, he gave Bobby Puma strong support. On April 22nd, 2016 the “Musical Freedom” sub-label “AFTR: HRS” was founded. This specializes in after-hours songs that are based on quiet styles and can therefore usually be classified in genres such as deep house and downbeat. In a similarly experimental style as Making Me Dizzy , What You're Waiting For , a collaboration with Ummet Ozcan , was released in May 2016 . A collaboration with bass house DJ Jauz was released on July 15, 2016, the song Infected . After he asked the Dutch future house DJ Mike Williams about his breakthrough in the previous year , they released the song I Want You together at the end of July 2016 .
As a follow-up to his successful remix of John Legends song All of Me , the joint song Summer Nights was released on June 17, 2016 . This was designed commercially and reached the official single charts in the Netherlands, Great Britain and the Netherlands, among others. A second collaboration with DallasK appeared as a free track. This is called Your Love and thus represents a sequel with the titles Show Me and Your Love . However, the successor does not follow their first collaboration in terms of style and content.
On June 19, 2016, Marshmello performed at EDC 2016 in Las Vegas. There it was announced that he would reveal his identity - but under the mask was Tiësto. 2017: Club Life, Vol. 5 - China
On January 13, 2017, the first pre-release single from his upcoming album was released. This is entitled On My Way . The English music duo Bright Sparks was also involved. In the official Dutch singles charts, the track moved up to number 26. With the song stylistic parallels to the music style of the French producer Kungs were noticed. Shortly afterwards, a house remix of his 2007 song Ten Seconds Before Sunrise, produced by Moska, and a new production of his song Feel It in My Bones with Riggi & Piros were released.
In May 2017, the song Boom followed , which was created in collaboration with Sevenn and premiered by the musicians together at the Ultra Music Festival 2017. The track was able to convince with over 100 million Spotify clicks, especially on streaming services. Critics and EDM magazines also praised "how the vocal is played here" and "a strong recognition feature is developed".
On September 8, 2017, Tiësto released the song Scream , which he produced in collaboration with the Dutch DJ and producer John Christian. The corresponding compilation album Club Life, Vol. 5 - China followed on October 6, 2017 . Besides him, John Christian and Swacq acted as the main actors. Tiësto himself presented eight previously unreleased productions on this album. The track Brolab was created in collaboration with the two other protagonists. 2018: I Like It Loud & Jackie Chan
On January 26, 2018, a vocal version of the previous year's track Boom with Sevenn was released. This was produced together with the American rapper Gucci Mane . In Sweden, the track was able to place itself in the singles charts for the first time thanks to the new version.
On March 25, 2018, Tiësto announced its first EP, which would consist of four songs. The first title would embody Melbourne bounce, the second would be based on progressive house, the third would represent future house and the last would correspond to big room house. On March 30, 2018, the EP was composed of a new recording of the song I Like It Loud by Marc Acardipane aka Marshall Masters and The Ultimate MC, which was created together with John Christian, Dawnbreaker with Matisse & Sadko, Coming Home with Mesto and Break the House Released down with MOTi.
On May 18, 2018 he released the song Jackie Chan together with the Canadian producer Dzeko , whose vocals were contributed by the American rapper Post Malone and the Canadian singer Preme. The song is a remix of the song of the same name by Malone and Preme solo, which was included on Premes studio album Light of Day . The remix developed into a commercial success that reached a top 10 placement in over 10 countries and received several record awards. The music video, which shows the artist as a Minecraft- style video game character , also received a lot of attention.
After the song was part of the sets by Hardwell and David Guetta over the course of the summer , Tiësto released the track Wow on August 24, 2018 . The aggressive big room number continued to evolve into a festival tool in the fall and has been referred to as a return to its roots by several online magazines.
Role as mentor
Since his appearance at the 2004 Summer Olympics, he has been considered a role model for many and aroused in Hardwell and Martin Garrix, among others, the desire to do the job of a DJ. In an interview with the online magazine “We Rave You”, he said that this is exactly what he would enjoy today. He connects with new artists, brings them into the studio and creates something new. Working with the young talents would have been his greatest influence in the last few years and it would have been what fulfills him most today. He also contacted Hardwell and Garrix privately before their breakthrough to give them feedback on their productions and to enable them to work together.
