history
Tomeşti was first documented in 1597 when it was inhabited by Wallachians . During the Habsburg monarchy to let German Bohemia down here. The glassblower Winkler founded the Tomeschter Glashütte in 1820 , which was in operation until 2006.
On June 4, 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . The largest, eastern part, to which Tomeşti also belonged, fell to the Kingdom of Romania . The glassworks, which was expropriated and nationalized in 1948 , was best known for exporting its products.
After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , the Tomeschter glassworks was on the brink of collapse. After one to two years, the company was able to export almost all of its production again under a new management team. The main customers included companies from the USA , Germany , France , Austria and the Netherlands . In 2006 the glassworks was sold.
Catholic services are still held regularly in the Roman Catholic chapel, which was donated by the Winkler family. The chandelier hanging in the center of the chapel is adorned with crystals made from the first glass that was made here. A crypt is also attached to the chapel, in which the members of the Winkler family found their final resting place. The last descendant of the family died in Bucharest, where he was cremated. His ashes were buried in the family crypt.
