history

Remete was first mentioned in a document in 1333. Archaeological excavations, however, testify to the existence of human settlements during the Hallstatt period . Other spellings: 1476 Remethe , 1723 Remeta , 1828 Remette , 1851 Remete , 1913 Temesremete .

During the Habsburg Monarchy , Remete belonged to the Counts Ambrozy. The Ambrozy family's castle, built in 1820, served as a military hospital during the revolution of 1848 . On November 5, 1846, Franz Liszt visited the estate in Remetea Mare and gave a concert there. The castle-like country house can still be seen today from the road that leads from Timisoara to Lugoj . Today the “Privighetoarea Banatului” restaurant is located in the former estate.

On June 4, 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . The largest, eastern part, to which Remetea Mare also belonged, fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
