history

Giarmata was first mentioned in the papal tithe registers from the years 1334-1335. In 1716, after the conquest of Timisoara by Prince Eugene of Savoy, Giarmata appears in the files of the Vienna Court Chamber Archives under the name "Jarmatha".

The colonization of Giarmata by Germans began in 1722 with around 20 families / 100 people from the Rhine region around Mainz . During the high Theresian settlement period, the place was expanded between 1763 and 1765 by the Sanktandres administrator Josef Franz Knoll .

On June 4, 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . The largest, eastern part, which also included the fair, fell to Romania. In 1940 the German population of Giarmata reached its greatest strength with 5046 people. Due to deportation and several waves of emigration, the population of German descent has steadily decreased since the end of the Second World War. In 2008 there were still five German residents living in Giarmata.

The grave inscriptions in the Giarmata cemetery are often in German

The grave inscriptions in the two cemeteries of the place testify to the German past of the place.

Legend

The center of the Giarmata is the "Great Fountain". Here Prince Eugene of Savoy is said to have thrust his sword into an oak tree, which is said to have provided fresh drinking water for him and his soldiers. The German-born residents of Giarmata pass this legend on to this day in poems and songs, some of which are glorifying, e.g. B. "Proud of Prince Eugene's well, my village is so beautiful there, all around are rich fields and gentle vine heights."
