The 30th WWE Royal Rumble 2017 was a WWE wrestling event that aired as pay-per-view and on the WWE Network . It was held on January 29, 2017 at the Alamodome in San Antonio , Texas , United States . It was the 30th edition of the Royal Rumble since 1988. The event took place for the second time since 1997 in the Alamodome, for the third time after 1997 and 2007 in San Antonio and for the fourth time after 1989, 1997 and 2007 in Texas.

In the run-up to the event, eight matches were scheduled, three of which were for the pre-show . These resulted from the storylines that were shown on Raw and SmackDown Live and the exclusive cruiserweight show 205 Live , the weekly shows of the WWE, in the weeks leading up to the Royal Rumble . The main fight was a traditional Royal Rumble Match, a 30-man Battle Royal .
Pre-show matches
At Roadblock: End of the Line on December 18, 2016, Cesaro and Sheamus defeated the titleholders The New Day ( Big E and Kofi Kingston with Xavier Woods ) in a match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship , ending their 483-day long record Title reign. On December 26, 2016 on Raw, Cesaro and Sheamus successfully defended their titles in a rematch against The New Day . On January 16, 2017 there was another title match on Raw between Cesaro and Sheamus on the one hand and Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows on the other, which the challengers won by disqualification after Sheamus accidentally knocked down the referee. As a result, Cesaro and Sheamus retained their titles, however. For the Royal Rumble, a new title match between the two teams was set, which was led by two referees.
Also at Roadblock: End of the Line there was a 30-minute Iron Woman match between champion Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair for the WWE Raw Women's Championship , which Charlotte Flair won and ended the almost one-year feud between the two. The next day, Banks was attacked by Nia Jax on Raw . On January 2, 2017, Nia Jax played a match against Bayley to determine the main challenger for the title of Charlotte Flair. During the match, Sasha Banks came to the ring and distracted Jax to lose it. Another week later there was a tag team match between Banks and Bayley on the one hand and Jax and Flair on the other, which the latter won. On January 16, 2017, a match between Sasha Banks and Nia Jax for the Royal Rumble was finally announced.
A third match for the pre-show was announced after the last SmackDown Live edition before the Royal Rumble on January 24, 2017. Here met Becky Lynch , Nikki Bella and Naomi in a six-women tag team match on Alexa Bliss , Mickie James and Natalya .
Pay-per-view matches
Even Kevin Owens denied at roadblock: End of the Line a successful match as he continues his WWE Universal Championship against Roman Reigns could defend after his ally Chris Jericho a disqualification had brought from Reigns. The next day, Raw General Manager Mick Foley announced that Reigns, who was also the winner of the WWE United States Championship at the time, would receive a rematch for the WWE Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble and Jericho in one over the ring during that match hanging shark cage.
Charlotte Flair defeated Sasha Banks in Roadblock: End of the Line on December 18, 2016, winning the WWE Raw Women's Championship for the fourth time . On January 2, 2017, there was a match on Raw between Nia Jax and Bayley , which the latter won and was therefore declared the challenger to the title of Flair for the Royal Rumble, whereby the match between Flair and Bayley was set for the event.
The WWE Cruiserweight Championship was able to defend Rich Swann in a triple threat match against former titleholders TJ Perkins and The Brian Kendrick at Roadblock: End of the Line . Following the match, Swann and Perkins were attacked by the returning Neville . On December 26, 2016, Neville challenged Swann to a match on Raw, which Swann accepted later that evening. A day later, Neville beat Swann at 205 Live. On January 10, 2017, the two agreed again at 205 Live on a title match at the Royal Rumble.
AJ Styles won a match for the WWE Championship on December 4, 2016 at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs , which he successfully defended against Dean Ambrose . On December 27, 2017, John Cena returned to the WWE on SmackDown Live after a nearly two month hiatus and presented a challenge to the WWE Champion. The match between Styles and Cena, who had already faced each other in individual matches at Money in the Bank and at SummerSlam last year, which were each won by Styles, was confirmed a week later.
Main Event
After defeating Brock Lesnar in his first wrestling match in twelve years at the Survivor Series on November 20, 2016 , Goldberg announced on Raw the following day that he would be the first participant in the Royal Rumble match at the end of January. A week later, Lesnar also announced through his manager Paul Heyman that he would take part in said match.
On January 2, 2017, The New Day ( Big E , Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods ) and later Chris Jericho and Braun Strowman announced on Raw that they would also take part in the Royal Rumble Match. A day later, Baron Corbin announced his participation as the first wrestler from SmackDown Live, as did Undertaker the following week on Raw and The Miz and Dean Ambrose on SmackDown Live and Dolph Ziggler on Talking Smack .
On January 16, 2017, WWE Raw Tag Team Championship winners Cesaro and Sheamus confirmed their participation in the Royal Rumble Match on Twitter . A day later the stable The Wyatt Family ( Bray Wyatt , Luke Harper and Randy Orton ) followed on SmackDown Live . On January 23, 2017, WWE announced the participation of Big Show on Facebook . That same evening, Big Cass and Rusev were also confirmed for the match on Raw . In addition, Seth Rollins lost his place there, which he had already taken on January 9, in a match to Sami Zayn . On January 24, 2017, Mojo Rawley won a ten-man battle royal on SmackDown Live and thus a place in the Royal Rumble. So 22 of 30 places in the Royal Rumble Match were already taken in advance.

Notes on the event
- The following title changes occurred during the event:
- Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows defeated Cesaro & Sheamus in a tag team match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship ;
- Neville defeated Rich Swann in a singles match to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship ;
- John Cena defeated AJ Styles in a singles match to win the WWE Championship .
- Braun Strowman attacked Roman Reigns during the match for the WWE Universal Championship and helped Kevin Owens to defend his title.
- With the 13th win of the WWE Championship (with three reigns as holder of the World Heavyweight Championship ) John Cena officially set Ric Flair's record as the 16-time holder of a WWE world heavyweight title.
- The following eight wrestlers took part in the Royal Rumble Match unannounced:
- Luke Harper split from his stable partners The Wyatt Family Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton during the Royal Rumble match when he turned against them.
- Roman Reigns was allowed to take part in the Royal Rumble Match with the number 30, although he had previously lost a match for the WWE Universal Championship against Kevin Owens ; this caused extremely negative reactions from the audience.
- Randy Orton won the Royal Rumble Match by last Roman Reigns eliminated, thus securing a place in the main event of WrestleMania 33 on April 2, 2017; this was also the second Royal Rumble victory for Orton after 2009. On February 14, 2017, Orton announced on SmackDown Live that he would forego this chance after his partner Bray Wyatt won the title at Elimination Chamber .
- Due to the long way in the stadium from the stage to the ring, some tall participants in the Royal Rumble match were transported to the ring in a kart that was not visible to TV viewers.
