The Afghanistan U-23 national soccer team is a selection team of Afghan soccer players . It is subject to the Afghanistan Football Federation and represents it internationally at the U-23 level , for example in friendly matches against the teams of other national associations or at the Summer Olympics .

Eligible to play are players who have not yet reached the age of 23 and who are Afghan citizens ; In the Summer Olympics and its offshoots, three players who are over the age of 23 are also entitled to play.

history

The U-23 national team was formed after the fall of the Taliban regime; first coach was Mir Ali Asghar Akbarzada . Their first international tournament played the selection at the Asian Games in 2002 in Busan, South Korea . Participation was made possible after Mongolia's withdrawal through a grant from FIFA of $ 40,000. On September 28, 2002, the team then played their first official international game against the selection of Iran and lost 0:10. The following two games against Qatar and Lebanon were each lost 0:11 and represent the biggest defeat of a U-23 selection in Afghanistan to date.

In 2004 he participated in the South Asian Games in Islamabad , Pakistan , and in 2006 the second in Colombo , Sri Lanka ; both tournaments ended after the preliminary round.

In February 2007 Afghanistan met in qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in Vietnam . However, the first leg was canceled because the Afghan Football Association was unable to finance the trip to Vietnam. The game, actually dated February 7th, was postponed by FIFA to February 14th and a second leg was waived; the team of South Korean coach Sung Jea Lee lost with 0: 2nd

The biggest achievement of the Afghan U-23 national team was second place at the 2010 South Asian Games . After the victories against India (1: 0), Pakistan (2: 1) and Sri Lanka (2: 0), the selection coached by Elyas Manochehr was the winner of Group A. After the semi-final victory against Nepal (1: 0) reached the final, where they lost 4-0 to Bangladesh and won the silver medal.

In the spring of 2015, Afghanistan took part in the qualification for the U-23 Asian Cup in 2016 and at the same time for the Olympic soccer tournament for Rio de Janeiro in 2016 . The Iranian Hosein Saleh took over the position of his predecessor Khoda Dad Zahir , who looked after the team during the 2014 Asian Games , and became the second foreign coach after Sung Jea-lee. After two defeats, one draw and one win, the qualification failed. You couldn't qualify for the 2018 and 2020 tournaments either.
