ATV (until 2000: W1 , from June 1, 2003 to May 31, 2006: ATVplus ) is an Austrian television program operated by ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE . On April 6, 2017, the ProSiebenSat.1 PULS4 broadcasting group took over the two broadcasters ATV and ATV2 from the previous owner, the Tele München Gruppe .
history
In 1997 the local station Wien 1 (W1) started in Vienna , which could only be seen via the cable network. On January 17, 2000, this was expanded into an Austria-wide program called ATV, which, however, was still only available via cable due to the legal situation at the time, at times also as part of the premiere via satellite and therefore only subject to a charge. When a legal basis for terrestrial private television was created, ATV applied, along with a few other broadcasting projects, for the only Austrian-wide broadcasting chain that was advertised and was ultimately awarded the contract. On June 1, 2003, ATV started nationwide terrestrial broadcasting for the first time. Since September 18, 2003, the program has also been broadcast via digital satellite.
In the course of the start of terrestrial broadcasting on June 1, 2003, the station name was changed from ATV to ATVplus in order to show viewers a "plus" in range and variety of programs. One day after June 1, 2006, which marks the three-year anniversary of terrestrial operation, the name ATVplus was changed back to the original form ATV. The station itself likes to compare itself with RTL in its initial phase.
ATV launched a second channel on December 1, 2011 with ATV2 . The new station wants to focus on entertainment and information. This should include Austrian in-house productions, feature films and series, as well as current news and weather information and a culture magazine.
The station received international attention in May 2016 with the production of the program "ATV Meine Wahl - Das Duell" which was broadcast on May 15, 2016. The two applicants for the election of the Austrian Federal Presidents , Norbert Hofer and Alexander Van der Bellen , fought a sensational battle of words for 45 minutes , live and unmoderated .
On October 27, 2016, ATV launched its new video-on-demand platform "ATVsmart". This is available on the Internet, as a separate transmitter in most cable networks and as an Hbb TV platform on the ATV and ATV 2 channels. An internet connection is required for use. All productions of the ATV Group can be accessed free of charge and anywhere on this platform.
At the end of August 2016, ATV managing director Herbert Kloiber announced that he wanted to sell ATV. He called ATV his biggest mistake. He made a loss in the tens of millions with the station. The German ProSiebenSat.1 Group , which also includes the Austrian broadcaster Puls 4 , emerged as a serious buyer early on . On February 6, 2017, the takeover by ProSiebenSat.1 was finally contractually agreed. This was approved by the federal competition authority. Critics see the takeover as a further concentration in the already weakly segmented Austrian television market. The advertising market is already dominated by the ProSiebenSat.1 Group.
The sale was completed on March 9, 2017 at a price of 25 million euros. Conditions were the maintenance of the Austria-related news programs and some Austrian formats such as Bauer sucht Frau , botch on construction, etc.
On April 6, 2017, the completion of the takeover was announced. There should be a new program scheme as early as May, which will be directed against the German broadcasters RTL and VOX . In 2018, the station was relaunched and moved to the Medienquarter Marx in Vienna. The new owner also continues to run the ATV 2 transmitter.
Company data
Like ATV2, ATV is operated by ATV Privat TV GmbH & Co KG. Its managing director has been Thomas Gruber since April 6, 2017.
Before the takeover by the ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 Group, the previous shareholder of the GmbH & Co. KG was the Austrian film rights dealer Herbert Kloiber :
- Tele-München Fernseh GmbH & Co production company : 48 percent
- HKL Medienbeteiligungs GmbH & Co KG: 52 percent
According to the advertising analyst Focus, the broadcaster's gross advertising sales in 2008 were around 44 million euros. ATV was thus most popular with advertisers as an individual private broadcaster.
In order to be able to use the terrestrial transmission masts in Austria , ATV has to pay annual fees to the ORS (= outsourced transmission system operating company of the public ORF ).
reception
ATV was the first and for a long time the only Austria far terrestrial (analog and DVB-T ), (analogue and cable DVB-C ), via satellite (digital only - DVB-S ) and DVB-H -air private television station . Due to a must-carry regulation , ATV must be receivable in all Austrian cable networks.
The broadcast via digital satellite (Astra) is only in encrypted form; Therefore, ATV can only be received with a digital satellite receiver if you have an ORF digital smart card or a Sky Austria smart card and the receiver can process this card.
ATV has also been broadcasting in HD since July 15, 2013. An ORF digital smart card or a Sky Austria smart card is sufficient for reception . Since autumn 2017 it has been broadcast in native HD, previously the program was only upscaled. A conscious decision is made not to include the station in the HD Austria group, which is subject to a charge, in order to achieve more range, which is required for the renovation of the station group.
Ranges
On average, ATV reaches a little more than one million viewers per day (in October 2009 that was 15.3% daily reach). The station's market share in 2010 was 3.5 percent of all viewers aged 12 and over. In the target group 12–49 it was around 5.7% and in prime time around 7.6%.
With a 6.2 percent market share among the target group of 12 to 49 year olds and 5.2 percent among 12 to 29 year olds between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m., September 2009 was when in-house productions such as Bauer sucht Frau , Österreich eats better , teenagers become mothers and Die Lugners the most successful month in the history of the station.
The most successful show (with the greatest reach) has long been "Bauer sucht Frau" on November 4, 2009. The average reach was 443,000 viewers, the peak value was 506,000 viewers. With 17.4% of the total population, Bauer sucht Frau was the market leader in prime-time for the first time in the history of the station, ahead of all other stations.
On October 12, 2013, a new record was set with the broadcast of the second half of the qualifying game Sweden against Austria of the 2014 World Cup : an average of 900,000 (991,000 at the top) Austrians watched, which corresponds to a market share of 34.4% (12+) or 38.4% in the main target group (12–49), the live stream was also viewed over 70,000 times. No other program on Austrian private television has ever achieved a higher market share (12+). On this day, ATV also achieved the highest daily market share in the station's history, with 12.5% (12+) and 16% in the main target group (12–49), respectively.

Football broadcasts
German Football League
ATV broadcast the top match of the German Bundesliga on Saturday live in Austria until the 2009/2010 season . In addition, selected Sunday games and the season opening game on Friday evening have been broadcast live for some time. The viewer was able to vote for the Saturday game himself by voting on the Internet site laola1.at . In a 30-minute summary after the live broadcast, pictures of the remaining games were shown. ATV acquired the rights for the German Bundesliga in October 2006 for three years.
Austrian Bundesliga
From the 2004/2005 season up to and including the 12th round 2006/2007, the broadcaster offered the daily summaries of the Austrian Bundesliga and some of the top games as live broadcasts. On October 16, it became known that Premiere, the main rights holder, had unilaterally terminated the sub-license agreement that served as the basis on the same day because ATV allegedly failed to meet its contractual obligations and was significantly in arrears. ATV, on the other hand, considers the termination to be legally ineffective, especially since at the time of termination there was still a lawsuit pending against ATV at the Munich Regional Court in unresolved contractual issues. Meanwhile, Premiere has entered into a replacement partnership with ORF for the rest of the season. ATV assessed this as an interference with its rights and, in addition to the legal disputes with Premiere, considered filing a lawsuit against ORF. A turnaround occurred on October 24, 2006, when the Munich Regional Court forbade the station Premiere with immediate effect from transmitting the Bundesliga content to ORF as a substitute. According to the court, this must be returned to ATV. ATV has the Austrian Bundesliga in its program again as usual. The final decision was made with the sport.orf.at report on November 8th. According to this, Premiere and ATV have agreed on a settlement of the disputes about the value of the free TV rights to the Bundesliga and the free TV rights were finally transferred to ORF. On July 3, 2007, ORF secured the Bundesliga rights from the 2007/2008 season up to and including 2009/2010.
Football internationals
On October 13, 2007 ATV was the first private broadcaster in Austria to show an international match for the Austrian national soccer team . It was the friendly against Switzerland in Zurich. ATV also broadcast all of the away games of the ÖFB team in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup .
Other football games
ATV has already broadcast several ÖFB Cup games , Europa League qualification games and Champions League qualification games .
Motorcycle World Championship
ATV broadcast all motorcycle races of the motorcycle world championship live from the 2006 season up to and including the 2012 season .
Summer 2016: off for sport
After the European Football Championship in 2016, the broadcaster stopped practically all of its sports coverage.
Protection of minors
There are slight cuts in feature films due to youth protection guidelines, but they tend to be less frequent than in Germany, for example. Not suitable for young people can be identified by adding a ! (Exclamation mark) in front of his usual station logo .
