Balksee and Randmoore / Basmoor and Nordahner Holz a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon communities of Wingst and Bülkau in the combined community of Land Hadeln , Mittelstenahe and Stinstedt in the combined community of Börde Lamstedt and the city of Hemmoor in the district of Cuxhaven .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 290 is 1,558  hectares in size. Most of it is part of the FFH area "Balksee and Randmoore, Nordahner Holz". In addition, 19.2 hectares of the nature reserve in the southwest of the Nordahner Holz form the "Nordahner Holz" natural forest reserve, which was designated in 1972 . The area has been a nature reserve since December 31, 2010. Three former nature reserves have opened up in the nature reserve: the 1974 designated nature reserve "Balksee und Randmoore" with the sign NSG LÜ 057, the nature reserve "Tunschlikers Moor / Auf der Rhede" designated in 1983 with the sign NSG LÜ 091 and the 1999 designated nature reserve "Nordahner Wood ”with the label NSG LÜ 249. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Cuxhaven, which manages the nature reserve under the label NSG CUX-010.

The area is located southwest of the Wingst , to the extension of which it reaches in the northeast. It includes the Balksee with its bank areas and the bordering bogs in the north and part of the Basmoor east of Stinstedt and the Nordahner Holz north of Mittelstenahe and west of Nordahn in the south.

The Balksee, surrounded by a wide silting zone, and the area surrounding it are just below sea level. Numerous watercourses from the surrounding area drain into the area. With the floodplain, there is only a natural runoff, so that the area was characterized by frequent flooding, which led to the formation of extensive low and high moors . With the construction of the Neuhaus-Bülkau Canal in the middle of the 19th century and other drainage measures, as well as the construction of a pumping station , the flooding could be limited to areas near the lake. As a result, large parts of the moorland were cultivated and used for agriculture.

Even today, larger areas within the nature reserve are predominantly used as grassland for agriculture . Existing and arable land should be converted to grassland.

In some areas in Basmoor bog areas have been preserved, while predominantly abgetorft are, by Wiedervernässungs but measures will be rehabilitated. The bog areas are partly overgrown with birch trees, partly broken forest can be found. There is also typical bog vegetation.

In the north of the nature reserve, mainly deciduous forests can be found in the transition area to the Geest . With the Nordahner Holz, another forest area is included in the nature reserve in the southeast. The Nordahner wood is characterized by deciduous forest.

The area drains via ditches and various streams into the Balksee, which in turn drains via the floodplain and the Neuhaus-Bülkau Canal to the Oste .

To the north of the Balksee there is an observation tower from which the lake and the adjacent areas can be seen. Hiking trails run through parts of the nature reserve.
