Barishal ( Bengali : বরিশাল জেলা , Bariśāl jelā ; also Barisal ) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh , which is within the Barishal division . The district has 2,324,310 inhabitants (2011 census).

The 2790.51 km² district borders in the north on the neighboring districts Madaripur , Shariatpur , Chandpur and Lakshmipur , in the east on Bhola and Lakshmipur and in the south on Patuakhali , Barguna and Jhalokathi and in the west Jhalokathi, Pirojpur and Gopalganj .

The main rivers are the Lower Meghna , Arial Khan , Katcha , Kirtankhola and a few more rivers.

The district, created as Bakerganj in 1797, was later renamed Barishal. Since 1993 he has been part of the division of the same name . The district is divided into ten Upazilas : Barishal Sadar, Agailjhara, Babuganj, Bakerganj, Banaripara, Gournadi, Hizla, Mehendiganj and Wazirpur. Within this administrative division there are 86 Union Parishads (village councils) and 1175 villages.

The largest city in the district is Barishal, with a population of almost 210,000 .
