Finkenstein am Faaker See

The market town of Finkenstein is largely located in the Faaker See basin between the Villach basin and Rosental . It is bounded in the north by the Drava and in the south by the Karawanken . Mallestiger Mittagskogel , Techantinger Mittagskogel (Truppekogel / Trupejevo poldne) and the 2145 m high Mittagskogel (Kepa) are the highest elevations. The wooded ridges of the Dobrova and the Humberg form the borders to the north and east. The Aichwaldsee lies between Unteraichwald and Untergreuth . The municipality has a share in the southern basin of the Faaker See including the island.

The place Finkenstein , in Slovenian Bekštanj , is located about four kilometers southwest of Lake Faak, about 4 km from the Villach / Warmbad motorway exit. It includes about 380 buildings about 1300 inhabitants. The historic center of Mallestig / Malošče with the Catholic branch church St. Margaretha (St. Stefan-Finkenstein / Šteben-Bekštanj parish) on the B85 Rosental Straße is now called Mallestiger Platz . To the north, the place extends to the Villach – Rosenbach railway line (Finkenstein stop) . The Gegeneritsch single layer also belongs to the village .

Community structure

In terms of area and population, Finkenstein is one of the largest rural communities in Carinthia. The municipality is divided into the nine cadastral communities Faak , Ferlach , Fürnitz , Greuth , Gödersdorf , Korpitsch, Latschach am Faaker See , Mallestig and St. Stefan.

Today's community takes its name from the Finkenstein Castle of the Lords of Finkenstein, first mentioned in 1142 , knightly followers of the Dukes of Carinthia.

The community of Finkenstein was constituted in 1850 and was enlarged in 1973 through the incorporation of the cadastral community Ferlach and other areas from the former local community of Maria Gail . In 1979 Finkenstein was given the right to use the name market municipality . In 2000 it was renamed Finkenstein am Faaker See .

At the time of the 2001 census, Finkenstein am Faaker See had a population of 8,198, 93.3% of whom are Austrian citizens, while Bosnia-Herzegovina with 2.5% and Germany with 1.3% make up the largest proportion of foreign citizens. 5.6% of the population belong to the Slovene-speaking ethnic group . The number of community residents has doubled since 1869 (+ 108%). This increase is above the average of the population development of the federal state of Carinthia (+ 77%).

The vast majority of the parish population is Roman Catholic (82.2%). The next largest religious community ( Protestant ) has a population of 6.0%. Members of Islam make up 2.8%, community citizens without religious belief make up 6.5%.

Slovenian cultural life and the Slovenian cultural association Jepa-Baško jezero

Slovenian has been present in the municipality since the early Middle Ages. Finkenstein is still part of the Slovene dialect area of the Gail Valley, but has already merged into that of the Upper Rosental Valley.

The organized cultural life of the Slovenes received a new dynamic at the end of the 19th century, but was suddenly interrupted by the First World War and the aftermath of the war. In 1922, on the initiative of Pastor Josip Ogris, Franz Aichholzer founded the Jepa Educational Association (Izobraževalno društvo "Jepa"), which advocates public education goals and education. School-age children are offered courses in Slovene, theater performances are given in Ledenitzen, Latschach and Ratnitz, and passion plays are also performed. The Slovenian singing culture is also rich, with numerous male choirs in Mallestig and Fürnitz.

In 1924 all parishes in the Lower Gail Valley and the Rose Valley were run in Slovenian.

The Slovenian priest, writer and politician Jurij Matej Trunk (1870–1973) from Faak was one of the outstanding personalities of the time. He was president of the Narodni svet za Rož (People's Council for the Rose Valley), adviser to the Yugoslav delegation at the peace conference in Paris and member of the referendum commission in 1920. In 1921 he emigrated to the USA.

After the war, the boys from Faak ( Baški fantje ) revived cultural life. Today the Slovenian cultural association Jepa-Baško jezero contributes to the cultural life in the community, to the integration and to the image of the community. Today's educational and cultural offer of the association is diverse and includes language courses for Slovene, gymnastics courses, the association newspaper JEPA and the department of the Glasbena šola music school .

Particularly noteworthy is the project to record the Slovenian field and farm names in the municipality of Finkenstein, which have been placed on the UNESCO list of intangible world cultural heritage .

Ringa raja multilingual kindergarten

Since the autumn of 1998, the ringa raja multilingual kindergarten (Otroški vrtec / Multilingual Kindergarten / Scuola materna Ringa raja) in Ledenitzen / Ledince , which emerged from the Slovenian cultural association Jepa-Baško jezero, has offered preschoolers the opportunity to learn both national languages and Italian while playing.

The official blazon of the coat of arms is according to the coat of arms and flag award document of October 31, 1979: "In silver a black, bloody cut off griffin foot ". The municipal flag is red and black with an incorporated coat of arms.

The oldest Finkensteiner seal on a document dated March 23, 1262 shows a feathered, but not cut off and bloody griffin foot, and also according to the Carinthian Chronicle of Jakob Unrest from the late 15th century, those - first mentioned in 1142 and in the first Extinct half of the 15th century - Lords of Finkenstein had a whole griffin foot in their coat of arms. However, the seal of Cholo von Finkenstein's on a document dated January 6, 1314 shows a griffin foot with a red (bloody) section as does the first field of the quartered shield of the barons and counts of Dietrichstein, who owned the Finkenstein rule from 1508 to 1861, like that that the community decided on this representation of the foot of the griffin at the new award.
