Berliner Stadtbilder is a Berlin definitive series that appeared from 1956 to 1963. The stamps were in use until about 1962 with the exception of the 1 Pf value and the 1963 value of 3 Pf, which were used longer. The series consisted of single-color stamps that were printed both in rolls and in sheets .
Most of the trademarks became invalid on December 31, 1964. The 1-Pf and the 3-Pf issue became invalid on December 31, 1970, the first 7-Pf stamp on December 31, 1957. It was the last independent definitive series of Berlin's, after which the series of the Bundespost with the Inscription "Deutsche Bundespost Berlin" used.
particularities
- The image format was portrait or landscape depending on the motif.
- The stamps for 1 and 3 DM had a larger format.
- As with all stamps that are printed in rolls and sheets, pairs and marginal pieces of the stamps form a special collection area because they can be used to prove that the stamps come from sheets. Since some stamps were printed in landscape format, they were connected to one another on the rolls via the left and right side of the stamp. Exceptionally, vertical pairs prove the origin of the arch. In the case of stamps that did not appear in rolls, the horizontal pairs are usually collected.
- The 1-Pf and 3-Pf stamp are among the few West Berlin stamps that were also sold at post offices in the Federal Republic . It was recommended to also stick the 1 Pf stamp on the letters out of solidarity with Berlin.
- The stamps from 1 Pf to 25 Pf were printed in the letterpress process, while the larger values from 30 Pf were produced in the higher-quality intaglio printing process. This can also be recognized by the fine grid that is deposited on the surfaces.
- Since the 1 Pf stamp was still reprinted in the 1960s, there is a version of it on fluorescent paper .
Motifs
Each postage stamp in the series shows a Berlin building or memorial , with functional buildings (such as the state post office) being mixed with sights (such as the Brandenburg Gate).
