history
The municipality of Valstrona was established in 1927 and initially united all the towns in the Strona valley (Fornero, Forno, Germagno, Loreglia, Luzzogno, Massiola and Sambughetto) with the exception of Campello Monti, which was added in 1929. In 1955 this large community was dissolved again; since then only the villages of Strona and Campello Monti belong to the municipality of Valstrona.
The origins of the two villages go back to the Middle Ages. The hamlet of Campello Monti , located at the back of the valley, was founded in the High Middle Ages as a Walser settlement; Today, however, the German dialect can only be grasped in a few field names. The Comunità di Cultura Walser Campello Monti - Verbania - Italia and the Walser Community Kampel (Gruppo Walser di Campello Monti) are dedicated to maintaining this memory and are in contact with other Walser associations in Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria.
