Chalais is a French municipality with 513 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Poitou-Charentes ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Châtellerault and the canton of Loudun . The inhabitants are called Chalaisiens .

Chalais is about 40 kilometers northwest of Châtellerault . Chalais is surrounded by the neighboring communities Loudun in the north and east, La Roche-Rigault in the east and south-east, Angliers in the south and Mouterre-Silly in the west.
