The Chester [ tʃɛstɚ ] County is a county in the US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2010 census , the county had 498,886 people and a population density of 254.8 people per square kilometer. The county seat is West Chester .

The Chester County is part of the Delaware Valley called metropolitan area around the city of Philadelphia .

The county is located in the southwest suburbs of Philadelphia and is separated from Maryland to the south by the Mason-Dixon Line ; the south-eastern border with Delaware is the Twelve - Mile Circle formed, one from the Delaware River to the Mason - Dixon - line beaten arc with a radius of twelve miles around the old courthouse of New Castle , Delaware.

history

Chester County was founded by William Penn on August 24, 1682 as one of three original Pennsylvania counties . It was named after the English county of Cheshire and its capital Chester .

On May 10, 1729, Lancaster County was spun off, Berks County was formed on March 11, 1752 from parts of Chester, Lancaster and Philadelphia Counties. In the winter of 1777/78, George Washington pitched his winter camp in Valley Forge during the American Revolutionary War .

As a National Historical Park , this camp is now under the protection of the National Park Service . Eight places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 319 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 18, 2018).

The racial the population was composed of 85.5 percent white, 6.1 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 3.9 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 6.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 12.6 percent were 65 years or older. 50.5 percent of the population was female.
