Crest is a commune with 8505 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in France , in the Drôme department , in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . The name comes from a crête rocheuse (rocky ridge), a rocky ridge that emerges from afar and is visible from afar and at the foot of which the city lies today.
geography
Crest is located in the southwest of the Drôme department, on the Drôme river of the same name , which gives the department its name. The city is also located southwest of the Vercors Regional Natural Park , with which it is associated as an access point.

Attractions
The city is dominated by the mighty tower castle standing on a steep rock face in the north , which is visible from afar when approaching from the south. The Crest Castle consists only of this tower, which at 52 meters is the tallest castle tower in France.
Huguenots were held captive in the castle for a long time . During visits you can still see wall scribbles from this time. This creates references to the Tour de Constance in Aigues-Mortes .
In 2001, a 93 meter long and 8 meter wide wooden bridge was completed that connects both banks of the Drôme. It is the longest wooden bridge in France.
One of the largest peony cultivars in the world is located in the La Plaine district , where you can see over 650 varieties of peony: the Pivoines Rivière nursery .
