Pavol Demitra (born November 29, 1974 in Dubnica nad Váhom , Czechoslovakia ; † September 7, 2011 in Tunoschna near Yaroslavl , Russia ) was a Slovak ice hockey player who worked for the Ottawa Senators , St. Louis Blues , Los Angeles, among others Kings , Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks played in the National Hockey League and Locomotive Yaroslavl played in the Continental Hockey League on the position of the center .
Career
Demitra began his professional career in 1992 with the Slovak first division club HC Dukla Trenčín . Here, the Ottawa Senators became aware of him and secured the rights to him when they selected him in the ninth round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in 227th place.
The next year he moved to North America for the 1993/94 season . In the three years that he spent with the Senators, he was only used sporadically in the NHL and spent most of the time on the farm team with the Prince Edward Island Senators in the American Hockey League . The 1996/97 season he spent mostly in the International Hockey League at Las Vegas Thunder and the Grand Rapids Griffins . It was not until the end of the season that he was used by his new NHL team, the St. Louis Blues .
In his first full season in St. Louis, 1997/98 , he was able to fight for a regular place, and the following year he made the breakthrough when he could score 89 points. In the 2002/03 season he, meanwhile as a leading player in the Blues, was able to improve this record to 93 points.
He spent the 2004/05 strike season again at his hometown club Dukla Trenčín.
From the 2005/06 season he played with the Los Angeles Kings and counted there in his first season again to the best scorers, although he only played 58 of the 82 games. For the 2006/07 season Pavol Demitra was given by the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Patrick O'Sullivan and a first round pick to the Minnesota Wild . After two years in Minnesota, the center forward moved to the Vancouver Canucks for the 2008/09 season .
In the summer of 2010 he was signed by Lokomotive Yaroslavl . On September 7, 2011, Pavol Demitra died in a plane crash near Yaroslavl . After his death, his jersey number # 38 was banned from all national teams by the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation .
