He began his professional career at Ajax Amsterdam in the early 1990s , where he won four Dutch championships ( 1994 , 1995 , 1996 and 1998 ), the KNVB Cup three times ( 1993 , 1998 and 1999 ), the UEFA Cup in 1992 and the Champions League in 1995 . In 1999 he moved abroad and after a two-year intermediate episode in Italy with Juventus Turin he found his new sporting home in the English Premier League from 2001 . He celebrated great success with Manchester United , especially from 2005 to the end of his career in 2011 . This again included four national titles ( 2007 , 2008 , 2009 and 2011 ), two league cup editions ( 2006 and 2009 ) and, in 2008, the Champions League again as the greatest achievement . Van der Sar took part with the Dutch national team in three world championships ( 1994 , 1998 and 2006 ) and four European championships ( 1996 , 2000 , 2004 and 2008 ) and was the record national player of "Oranje" with 130 appearances until June 9, 2017. He was considered one of the best soccer goalkeepers of his time and, due to his technical and soccer skills, he was the prototype of a modern goalkeeper who “played along”.

Club career

Van der Sar began his career at Foreholte , a club in Voorhout . From there he moved to VV Noordwijk and it was not until the age of 18 that Ajax Amsterdam focused on him . Van der Sar's uncle Kees Guyt had previously played in a team with Frans Hoek in Volendam and since Hoek was now a goalkeeping coach in Amsterdam, Guyt recommended his nephew. Hoek persuaded the then youth coordinator Louis van Gaal , who was also friends with van der Sars coach, to go to Noordwijk. On display was a tall, slim boy who did not resemble the type of strong goalkeeper like Hans van Breukelen , who was very popular at the time. His original goalkeeping game was inconspicuous, but what made him stand out was the fact that he had exceptional footballing qualities.

Ajax Amsterdam

In his first year van der Sar came under the then head coach Leo Beenhakker on nine league appearances in the 1990/91 season, where he completed his first appearance on April 23, 1991 against Sparta Rotterdam . The following year he sat on the bench while his team won the UEFA Cup in the final with Stanley Menzo between the posts against Torino Calcio . When Menzo made a few mistakes at the beginning of the 1992/93 season, van Gaal promoted van der Sar to the new goalkeeper. A big advantage for him was the introduction of the back pass rule , in which the world football association FIFA stipulated from 1992 that goalkeepers were no longer allowed to pick up the ball with their feet during a controlled return leg. This suddenly changed the requirement profile of a goalkeeper, as he was now forced to solve conflict situations more often with football technology. At the end of May 1999, after a total of 226 league appearances for Ajax Amsterdam, he announced the premature end of his contract, which actually ran until summer 2001. The goal was the Italian top club Juventus Turin, where he met his old teammate Edgar Davids again. At "Juve" he was to succeed Angelo Peruzzi, who, like coach Marcello Lippi , should move to Inter Milan . Juventus Turin

As the first foreign goalkeeper of Juventus Turin van der Sar spent a good first season in 1999/2000 in the new area. He won the UI Cup with Juve right from the start, and Serie A also went well when a record of unbeaten games in a row was almost broken. In total, he conceded only 19 goals against in 32 league games in the end, but finally had to witness how Lazio still overtook the championship duel.

The second year turned out to be unhappy. Already at the beginning of the 2000/01 season he made a few mistakes, including a goal after a rather harmless long-range shot by Marcelo Salas in another duel with Lazio Rome. Furthermore, he conceded an unlucky goal in the Champions League against Paulo Sousa from Panathinaikos Athens and "Juve" was eliminated in the group stage as bottom of the table with twelve goals conceded. Also in the championship they were left behind against a club from Rome, where now Lazios city rivals AS Roma won the title. Van der Sar was unlucky again in the important duel against Rome when a 2-0 lead ended with a 2-2. He could only clap a shot from substitute Hidetoshi Nakata and thus enabled Vincenzo Montella, who was standing by, to “defeat” to equalize.

Juventus strengthened themselves in the summer of 2001 with the Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and so it was clear that van der Sar's days in Turin were numbered.

Fulham FC

In 2005 van der Sar moved to Manchester United , with the tacitly agreed transfer fee being said to have been around two million pounds. The now almost 35-year-old "veteran" immediately took over the role of the new "number one" at his new club and was partly responsible for realigning the defensive behavior of "United". The "Red Devils" had been without an English championship title for two years and both coach Alex Ferguson and defensive teammates like Mikaël Silvestre appreciated the calm and leadership that van der Sar radiated. Although the Premier League could not be won in the third year , van der Sar won his first title with the League Cup - Tim Howard had completed the first rounds before the semi-finals against Blackburn Rovers . On the way to the English championship in 2007 , he contributed 15 games without conceding a goal. The quality he learned at Ajax to form the last line of defense continued to play a role and his penalty against Manchester City in May 2007 was a kind of preliminary decision in the fight for the league title. During the 2008/09 season, van der Sar stayed in the Premier League for 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal. He successively beat the previous records of Chelsea's Petr Čech (as the previous record holder in the Premier League with 1,032 minutes in the 2004/05 season), Steve Death from Reading FC (in English professional football with a total of 1,103 minutes in 1979) and Bobby Clark from FC Aberdeen (based on all British professional football with 1,155 minutes in 1971) before Peter Løvenkrands of Newcastle United overcame him on Matchday 28. The goalkeeper missed Dany Verlinden's European record by 79 minutes. He completed his Premier League hat trick with the next championship title . Due to a finger injury from the Audi Cup in summer 2009, van der Sar had to take a break until October and thus missed the first twelve matches. Shortly after his comeback he suffered a knee injury and only returned in January 2010 against Burnley FC (3-0). In the Champions League , he completed the quarter-finals against FC Bayern Munich , but could not prevent the narrow elimination. In February 2010 he extended his contract for a further year in Manchester for the last time. He ended his career at Manchester United at the end of the 2010-11 season . On May 28, 2011 he lost 3-1 in his last professional game in the Champions League final against FC Barcelona . The final was his 100th game in the European Cup. Van der Sar, then 40 years and 7 months old, was the oldest player to have made it to a Champions League final.

Van der Sar officially ended his career on May 28, 2011.

VV Noordwijk

On March 12, 2016, 45-year-old van der Sar played a game for the amateur club with the permission of the KNVB as a replacement for the injured goalkeeper Mustafa Amezrine. VV Noordwijk and the Jodan Boys separated 1: 1, van der Sar saved a penalty in the course of the game.

Even before his first international match, van der Sar was part of the Dutch national team that traveled to the USA in 1994 for the World Cup . There he was not used as a substitute behind Ed de Goey , but about a year later he made his debut on June 7, 1995 in Minsk against Belarus as part of the qualification for Euro 1996 in England . The game was lost 0: 1, but from then on he was the goalkeeper of "Oranje". He stood between the posts when the Netherlands defeated Ireland 2-0 in Liverpool in a playoff, made it to the quarter- finals themselves and was powerless there in a lost penalty shoot-out against France against all five shooters. After the active career

Van der Sar was hired on November 26, 2012 as Marketing Director on the board of Ajax Amsterdam. As such, he remained in office for a period of four years until November 2016; from September 2015 to October 2016 he was also the sporting director of Ajax. Since November 11, 2016, van der Sar has been the managing director of Ajax Amsterdam.

On March 9, 2016 it was announced that the now 45-year-old van der Sar will be hired for at least one game by his former training club VV Noordwijk , a Dutch fourth division club.
