Eesti Laul ( German : "Estonian Song" ) is the Estonian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . Until 2008 the preliminary decision was called Eurolaul , synonymous with the Estonian name for the Eurovision Song Contest. The public television broadcaster Eesti Televisioon (ETV) is responsible for the event .

format

The Estonian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest has been held every year in January, February or March in the Estonian capital Tallinn since 1993 . Between eight and ten candidates compete against each other; only in 1996 were thirteen participants at the start. From 1993 to 2003 the Estonian entry was selected by an international jury. However, the population had the opportunity to advise the jury by means of televoting . Only in 1998, 2000 and 2001 did the jury follow the audience's recommendation. In 2002, the German Julia Hillens took part in the preliminary round for the Estonian producer Vahur Valgmaa , where the Hamburg native took sixth place. In 2004 and 2005 ETV switched to pure televoting. In 2006 the previous selection system was used again. A relatively complicated televoting system has been in use since 2007.

In 2009 the Eurolaul ( Euro-Lied ) was replaced by the new decision Eesti Laul .
