European Cup Winners' Cup 1986/87

The 1987/88 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 28th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 33 club teams from 32 countries took part, including 22 national cup winners (including defending champions Ajax Amsterdam ) and 11 defeated cup finalists (FK Witoscha Sofia, Olympique Marseille, Dundalk FC, Atalanta Bergamo, Sliema Wanderers, FC Swarovski Tirol, Sporting Lisbon, ADO Den Haag, Aalborg BK, Dynamo Minsk and Dinamo Bucharest). Clubs from England were still excluded from participation after the Heysel disaster . The Welsh Cup winner Merthyr Tydfil FC from the English Southern League Premier Division, the seventh level of the English league system, entered this competition as the lowest-ranking club to have ever taken part in a European Cup.

From Germany were DFB Cup winners Hamburger SV , from the GDR FDGB Cup winners 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , from Austria ÖFB Cup finalist FC Swarovski Tirol and from Switzerland cup winners BSC Young Boys .

The final at the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg was surprisingly won 1-0 by Belgian outsider KV Mechelen against the high favorites and defending champion Ajax Amsterdam.

The top scorer was the Brazilian Paulinho Cascavel from Sporting Lisbon with 6 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
