The Copa América - until 1972 Campeonato Sudamericano de Fútbol - is a continental tournament for national soccer teams to determine the South American champions in soccer , which has been organized by CONMEBOL since 1916 . The competition mode has been changed several times. Participants are traditionally the members of the association, namely the South American countries Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Chile , Ecuador , Colombia , Paraguay , Peru , Uruguay and Venezuela .
Football teams from North and Central America have also been invited since 1993 . Usually these are the winner and the runner-up of the CONCACAF Gold Cup , the continental championship of the North and Central American Association CONCACAF . A team from Asia is also invited far less often . In 1999 and 2019, this was the Japanese national soccer team . In 2019, the Qatari national soccer team also took part, as the participation of countries in the CONCACAF was not possible due to the concurrent CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 .
The Copa América winner qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup .
history
After the Olympic football tournament, the Copa America is the second oldest football tournament still taking place for national teams. It was first held in 1916 in honor of the independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata , which primarily represent the predecessor state and still an official name for Argentina , but also include today's Uruguay . As early as 1910, a Campeonato Sudamericano with three participants was held, which Argentina had won and is sometimes referred to as the first Copa América. Until 1967 the tournament was called Campeonato Sudamericano like the predecessor of 1910 , since 1975 Copa América . As early as 1910, an earlier trophy called the "Copa América" was played. As a result of the organizational success of 1916, the Argentine Foreign Ministry founded CONMEBOL's current Copa América in 1917. This was introduced for the first officially scheduled new edition in 1917 , while in 1916 they had to do without a trophy. The CONMEBOL association was only founded during the tournament of 1916 on the Argentine Independence Day after the Uruguayan representative Héctor Rivadavia had seized the opportunity. Since 1997 there has also been a cup, the "Copa Bolivia", which goes to the defeated finalists and which Bolivia was the first to receive in 1997 in its own country.
In contrast to other continental tournaments such as the European Football Championship, there are no qualifying matches at the Copa America, with one exception in 1967 , which is due to the low number of CONMEBOL members. Four teams took part in the first tournament in 1916; for the first time in 1975 all ten current member associations took part. No association took part in all championships. While the tournament was a large round-robin tournament for all participants for a long time , it has now been adapted to the familiar mode of other international tournaments and includes a group stage with three groups and a knockout round that begins with the quarter-finals. This always makes it necessary to invite two visiting teams, as twelve participants are required for the group stage. Mexico is a regular guest.
The Copa América Centenario 2016 was a special edition of the Copa América. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the South American football association CONMEBOL , the tournament took place for the first time outside of South America, in the United States . In addition to the ten participants in CONMEBOL, six members of CONCACAF also took part in the tournament.
The Copa América will take place in two countries for the first time in 2021. This was announced by the CONMEBOL association at a meeting in April 2019. The tournament was awarded to Argentina and Colombia. The preliminary round is held in two groups. The northern group is based in Colombia. Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru play there. The southern group in Argentina consists of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia. In addition, a visiting team from outside South America will participate in both groups. The tournament will end with the final in Argentina. The tournament was originally supposed to take place in 2020, but was postponed by CONMEBOL on March 17, 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 (corona virus) virus.
