The land and local rule in Affaltern and the hamlet of Salmannshofen was exercised by the Augsburg Cathedral Monastery . In Biberbach, in addition to the view of the remains of the castle in the Markt district, the parish church of St. Jakobus, St. Laurentius and the Holy Cross still reminds of the Fuggers today .

Sights, culture and tourism

Interior of the pilgrimage church of St. James and Laurentius.
  • The pilgrimage church of St. Jakobus, St. Laurentius and the Holy Cross : The foundation stone for the pilgrimage church, richly decorated in rococo style, was laid on May 16, 1684 in the presence of Bishop Johann Christoph von Freyberg , by pastor Anton Ginther (the initiator of the Biberbach pilgrimage ) and laid by builder Valerian Brenner . On the feast of the Finding of the Cross, May 3, 1681, Holy Mass was celebrated for the first time in front of the miraculous image, a large Romanesque crucifix. The image of grace is popularly known as "Dear Herrgöttle von Biberbach " (see picture on the left). On September 15, 1697 the inauguration of the completed new church took place. Dominikus Zimmermann provided some of the furnishings .
  • On November 6th, 1766 there was an organ competition in the pilgrimage church between the then ten-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the twelve-year-old grandson of the Biberbach organist, Joseph Eugen Sigmund Bachmann (1754-1825), who later entered a Premonstratensian monastery and there under the religious name of Father Sixtus Bachmann also worked as a composer.
  • In 1632 the pastor Ulrich Zusamschneider from Biberbach was cruelly tortured by Swedish soldiers in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War and shot near Achsheim . A panel painting (around 1693) on the west gallery shows this scene: the Gothic church and Markt Castle can be seen in the background. At that time the cross was also hidden. Maximilian Fugger , the lord of Oberndorf, Biberbach, Duttenstein and Niederalfingen and the keeper of Rain am Lech , had it salvaged, restored and attached to the church wall in 1655.
  • Around 1665 the importance of the pilgrimage to the "Herrgöttle" increased so much that at the end of the 17th century a uniform baroque church was built.

Special pilgrimage days are the deanery pilgrimage of the deanery Augsburg-Land on the 3rd Sunday of Lent (Laetare), the star pilgrimage of the districts of Biberbach on Sunday around 14 September (feast of the Exaltation of the Cross and commemoration of the consecration) and the youth pilgrimage of the deanery Augsburg-Land on October 3. Smaller and larger groups of pilgrims come all year round on foot or by bus. At the pilgrimage church Biberbach, HH Dr. theol. Joseph Moosariet from India as parish administrator.

  • There is a group of calvaries at the ascent to St. James and Laurentius. In addition to the crucified Lord, it also includes two other crosses with the thieves. Under the cross are the figures of Mary, Mary Magdalene and John. The group is completed by a Roman soldier on horseback who looks up to the crucified Christ from a position slightly downhill. These are zinc cast figures, cast around 1910.
  • The Bavarian-Swabian Jakobusweg, signposted in 2003, leads through Biberbach from Donauwörth via Augsburg to Lindau.
Castle market
  • Burg Markt : The remains of Burg Markt rise above the district of Markt on a ridge that slopes down on three sides. The castle is documented as early as the 14th century, but the oldest surviving parts of the building date from 1525, when the Fuggers had the castle rebuilt as a palace. Jakob Fugger had bought the castle built by the Pappenheimers in Markt 1514 together with Biberbach and had the castle rebuilt. The keep, the ring walls and the Onoldsbach tower all date from this time. Markt Castle stands on a ridge that slopes steeply on three sides high above the Schmutter river on the western edge of the northern Lech Valley. The silhouette of the castle can be seen from afar. The two distinctive keep and the double wall ring with buttresses and towers date from the 16th century. The Catholic Palace Chapel of St. John the Baptist is located in the courtyard. It was built in 1738/39 in the Baroque style by Simon Rothmiller. The courtyard is surrounded by manor buildings from the 19th century. These are now used by a riding stables. The Jakobsweg mentioned above leads over the castle hill.
