location
The Geifitze nature reserve is located in the Onstmettingen district to the west of the village. It is located in the Hohe Schwabenalb natural area . Geologically it lies in the Oxford strata of the Upper Jurassic.
The area is part of the FFH area around Albstadt and the bird sanctuary Südwestalb and Upper Danube Valley . It is almost completely enclosed by the Albstadt-Bitz nature reserve. In the southwest on the other side of the path there is the Längenloch nature reserve .
Landscape character
It is a diversely structured wetland complex . The upper reaches of the Danube tributary Schmiecha and its side valleys are largely natural. Be highlighted sedge societies in succession located willow thickets and fens. The area is breeding, feeding and migration area of endangered bird species.
Geotop peat bog Geifitze
In the area there is a low moor , which is registered under the name Peat Moor Geifitze below the Schmiech origin 2500 m WNW of Onstmettingen and the number 6860/5062 at the LGRB as a geotope. The moor owes its origin to its location in the source area of the Schmiecha and the impermeable subsoil of the Impressamergel formation .
Protection purpose
According to the Protected Areas Ordinance, the main protection purpose is "the preservation, care and improvement of a diverse, structured wetland complex, which is rare for the Swabian Alb, which is characterized by dry locations, as a habitat for numerous endangered and protected animal and plant species." In particular, the largely natural course of the Schmiecha, the adjacent large sedge communities and willow bushes, the bog areas including the butterfly species attached to them, and the entire landscape as a habitat for endangered bird species.
Surname
The name "Geifitze" comes from the Swabian word Geifitz , which describes the lapwing . It is likely that lapwing once used the wetland as a breeding or resting place.
Flora and fauna
Numerous endangered and protected animal and plant species are found in the area, including the ringed mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria eunomia ).
